Write or Die

Write or Die

Welcome to Write or Die.

You’re reading this, and that’s good, it means you have a hunger for the thing that I love most: writing. Humans are communicators. We want to talk about it, write about it, and express how we feel. You have a story and now you want to send it off into the world.

Congratulations!

Except it’s not that simple, is it? There are so many things to consider, things that you may need more clarity on. The Write or Die conference is here to help. I’ve put together a panel of women who I believe in. They are experts in this ever-expanding book community. Our desire is to inspire you, motivate you, and give you the tools to refine your craft. We want to teach you better ways to market yourself, use your failures as weaponry, and be seen in a well-saturated market.

-Tarryn

These days it’s a lot of long hours at my desk w These days it’s a lot of long hours at my desk writing. I get mad cabin fever so Josh tries to get me out of the house on the weekends. Often when I go out I feel like an imposter in the real world; am I here or there? Which story is happening? And that’s because I live a double life: one life plays out in my head and one happens in front of my physical eyes. They’re both creatively mine and they both hold me accountable. 💕

but in your head you should know. That’s queen energy and I want you to have it. Don’t naysay compliments. Digest what’s been said and claim it. Doubt will try to steal from you but you can reject the doubt with the same energy you previously rejected compliments. My friend @kennedyryan1 wrote a book called Queen Move. I love that title (and book) because our lives should be composed of queen moves. I think you’re all pretty special, so go act like it and stop being deniers of your own gifts

It’s a cute winter over here, folks. Have I ment It’s a cute winter over here, folks. Have I mentioned that I love having a toddler and teens at the same time? Avett brings excitement and pure enthusiasm to everything we do as a family, but I also love having older kids who are great conversationalists and funny as hell. I find it easier to be a toddler mom at this age than my twenties when I was still high strung and scrubbing my sink ten times a day. Actually,
I find everything easier at this almost-forty-age. I’d highly recommend the thirties to all women especially the ones who are twenty-nine.

“I’m going to kill her. You’d better come if you want to save her.”

Lorraine—“Rainy”—lives at the top of Tiger Mountain. Remote, moody, cloistered in pine trees and fog, it’s a sanctuary, a new life. She can hide from the disturbing past she wants to forget.

If she’s allowed to.

When Rainy reluctantly agrees to a girls’ weekend in Vegas, she’s prepared for an exhausting parade of shots and slot machines. But after a wild night, her friend Braithe doesn’t come back to the hotel room.

And then Rainy gets the text message, sent from Braithe’s phone: someone has her. But Rainy is who they really want, and Rainy knows why.

What follows is a twisted, shocking journey on the knife-edge of life and death. If she wants to save Braithe—and herself—the only way is to step back into the past.

I remember being in the hospital after he was born I remember being in the hospital after he was born, looking down at his little face and saying out loud “I have a son.” I legit thought I was having three girls, so when the doctor told me I was growing a boy I was confused. I was even more confused when I was pushing him out and my best friend yelled “he has red hair!” from her vantage point. WHAT?! Turns out that Ryder Atticus is the most perfect man on the planet. He’s been my joy for eleven years. He’s just so good and pure and wise. Happy birthday to MY SON. I’m so proud of you.

When I was fourteen and two years into my American When I was fourteen and two years into my American adventure (still had an accent at that point) I walked alone to a fast food restaurant. It was my first time doing something independently of my parents in a foreign country. Three men flanked the door as I approached it: spiky blue hair, dog collars, facial piercings, tattoos—little me had never seen anything like this. Youth group warned us about these men though—satanic panic was barely over. I was terrified. But I’m still Tarryn, right, so I keep going because even then I was a glutton for Pollo Tropical. The six footer with the smurf spikes doesn’t try to kidnap me, he holds the door open very politely and smiles. “Hi,” I say weakly. “Enjoy your meal,” he says back. That was a moment for me. My perspective changed. I’d spent the walk over being afraid of them instead of looking at their awesome outfits.

Eccentric displays of fashion and hair and makeup are echoes of a person’s insides: they are creating visual art. Not only that but they are showing you their culture, their defiance, their hope. If that isn’t the most beautiful damn thing.

When I had children I didn’t want them to see difference the way I initially had. If I saw someone eccentric I’d say “oh my gosh! Look how beautiful!” I’d point out someone wearing a dog collar and a tutu as art. “I love it!” I’d declare about almost anything weird or strange or visually appalling. And I did. Because of those dog collar wearing dudes with the chains on their jeans. I love it all. And my kids love it. And why shouldn’t we adore the visual artists of this world? So next time you see someone doing the exact opposite of everything you’d do—take a moment to admire them. They are stunning.

Non filtered, non curated photos today. I’ve bee Non filtered, non curated photos today. I’ve been on insta for nine years. I like to have a magazine aesthetic over here; it greatly pleases me. Instagram brings me joy because I’m able to express myself in photos. If you scroll all the way back I was expressing misery for the first five years. I was miserable! and it helped. I’ve gradually grown into a much kinder, accepting, joyful human and I documented it all on this little app. So, I know we like to kick social media, but it’s really what you make of it. To me it’s been another form of art and expression. And it’s connected me to all of you.
