I wrote this…whatever it is on my plane ride back from Australia. My mom read over my shoulder and when I was finished she said- “Your individualized people…what do you call them?” “Indie reader’s mom.” “Yeah, those. I’ve seen them react to some of the other things you say. They’re going to get mad at you for this post.” “Yeah.” “You’re still going to post it aren’t you?” “Yeah.” “How come?” “Because I’d rather be hated for having an opinion than overlooked for not having one.” “You’re going to lose readers.” “Yeah.” “Then how will you buy shoes?” “I have enough to last for the next few years until I can win them back.”
I’m the most pathetic wine drinker on the planet. True story. For the most part when people start drinking wine they start with the cheap, sweet stuff. That’s what I started with anyway; a nice glass of Mogden David strawberry zinfandel. It tasted like candy. Mmmmm mmmm. Once you get a handle on the fermented taste-you move up a notch on the taste pole-maybe try something in a sweet red. That’s where I stopped progressing, over ten years ago when I tasted my first glass of wine. The acquired taste for expensive, sophisticated wine never developed on my taste buds no matter how hard I tried. Now, if you visit my wine rack you’ll find it loaded with Jam Jar-a South African Shiraz so sweet it curls back your top lip. So why didn’t I get the acquired taste everyone is always talking about? Was my wine growth stunted? Am I a white trash wine drinker? Who the hell knows-and what does this have to do with Amy Harmon’s The Law of Moses, anyway? For the record I’d like to be able to stick my nose in the air and say “This bottle of wine cost two hundred dollars you cheap Shiraz drinking scumbag”. But, it’s more likely that I’ll pull out a bottle of Jam Jar, screw off the top, and sheepishly offer you a glass.
What I can say after reading The Law of Moses is this: This is a top of the line book-you cheap reading scumbag! I hope I don’t have to say this to you. I hope you can see this for yourself within the first few extremely well written pages. But, I’d like to talk for a minute about acquiring a sophisticated reading palate (Can someone tell me how to acquire a sophisticated wine pallet?). Now, just like with wines, there are all kinds of fine books: dry ones (Dave Newel’s Red Lory), spicy ones (Alessandra Torre’s The Girl in 6E); she writes so well that the fact I’m reading erotica-which isn’t my normal genre-comes secondary to the brilliance of her work. There are also soft toned books (Slammed by Colleen Hoover) and just outright disturbing ones that take a unique palate (The Dark Duet series by CJ Roberts). All of the books mentioned have one thing in common: damn good writing. In the independent publishing world there is a little bit of everything for everyone. (For the record Colleen is no longer self published and Alessandra has a foot in each world). All of the books mentioned are-or were self published and defiantly brave. They broke through, tore down lines, and taught us what readers want. They are, in my opinion, the best of indie.
I’ll probably take a lot of flack for this post, but just like you, I am entitled to an opinion so don’t be rude in your comments and I won’t eat your soul while you sleep. I’m a finicky, picky reader. The order of importance when I read a book goes as follows: writing technique (which includes dialogue), believable characters and storyline that contains a beginning, a middle and an end. Why does storyline come last and writing technique come first? Well, first and foremost, I’m a writer. I like to read things that hone my skill, that make me sit up straighter and go “damn! That was a great way to say something that’s been said a million times before!” And if a book is well written it’s easy for me to read. But, learning how to write good sentences takes work, and that’s a whole other post. (Though I do urge writers to read On Writing by Stephen King. It’s the best crash course in writing you will ever take.) And it seems that in this Goldrush Indie movement, fewer and fewer writers are willing to put in the work to hone that particular skill, rather rushing to publish. Not realizing that work pays off! Characters-let’s move on to why they are important. Characters are the hands that guide you through a story. No one wants their boring, vapid cousin to lead them through a particularly turbulent time in life. You’d want someone smart, sassy, interesting, and most of all, intelligent. So why read a book in which the heroine says things, does things, acts on things that are trite and overdone? I want flaws. I want real. And the more excellent books I read, the more I crave interesting, multi layered characters (Frank from Angela’s Ashes is the perfect example of this). Storyline runs last in my book of importance. Why? Because, let’s face it: not everyone has a giant named Hagrid come to collect them for their first year at a magical school. And not everyone volunteers to take the place of their eleven year old sister in the Hunger Games. And I don’t know about you, but I’ve never touched a stone and met a handsome Scotsman (though I’d like to). Life is sometimes boring. I’m okay with that so long as the participating people make it interesting. I could sit in a white room for hours with my friend, Madison Siedler, and she’d have me laughing hysterically the whole time. We’d make fun of each other, we’d philosophize about life, we’d make fun of other people, we’d cry. But most importantly, there would be a lot of personality in that room. Characters drive plot. I can’t emphasize that enough. Okay, okay so what does this have to do with Amy Harmon and her newly released The Law of Moses? Everything. Because Amy nailed it. She nailed it so hard I feel like I’ve taken a hammer to the head. She could teach a class on writing (I’d attend). You can miss the finer points of this book if your taste buds are attuned only to one type of wine. If you’re looking for a quick thrill, wet panties, or mindless entertainment, you won’t like the subtle hues and expensive flavors in The Law of Moses. But I’m urging you for once to keep your panties dry and explore yourself a little bit. The corners. The way she consistently developed characters (Georgia’s small town humility and concrete boldness never wavered or shook) or the complex duplicity of Moses and the way he sees the world. I also enjoyed her strong, carefully crafted sentences (They found Moses in a laundry basket at the Quick Wash, wrapped in a towel, a few hours old and close to death). This gives you the entire story without droning on and on, and on, and on. It’s sharp and graphic. Beautiful. And the storyline. The powerful storyline! One that I can’t hint at in case I ruin it for you. But it’s the type of book you can take a week to dissect. Does Amy Harmon infuse her belief system into her stories? Absolutely. We all do you know. Though what I have found about Amy’s belief system causes me to respect her more as both a human and a writer because she believes in something other than tattooed biceps and a long, experienced dick.
After writing a particularly inflammatory facebook post one afternoon in which I harshly judged people’s reading tastes, one of my readers and a writer herself (Lori Worely) gave me a bit of advice. “Don’t criticize what people read. Criticize what they don’t read.” Duh, Tarryn! I was humbled. It’s so true. I like Jam Jar and that’s my business. But, what am I missing by not trying something else? Knowledge is power and all that true bull crap. Experience will not hurt your mind. And here I end my review of wine and The Law of Moses. If you can forgive me for drinking crap wine I can look past your book tastes, but at least take a sip every now and then…of something that can expand what you know. Make your mind burst with new flavor. You can set it aside after that and go back to your Mogden David strawberry zin, but you won’t forget your experience with dark chocolate and cherries aged in an oak barrel (haha Jonathan! oakoakoakoak). Whatever genre you read, read the most well written of its kind (no genre judgement from me) and every so often read outside of that genre. At the very least you can say “I drank that once” and feel a little bit more experienced. For the record The Law of Moses was a Pinot Noir: dark with hints of chocolate and blackberry, with subtle hues of the tree of life. Five Stars Amy Harmon. Well done. It was so beautiful it made my soul quiver.
***I have three signed copies of The Law of Moses to give away to readers. I will chose the winner from the comments on this post so please leave one before you go.
I loved The Law of Moses! Beautifully written, amazing characters and the story, incredible!
Perfect review… The Law of Moses was my top read for 2014… Just beautiful…
I haven’t had a chance to read this yet, but it looks so good!!!
i would love to win a signed copy. I love her books however I have yet to read this one
Love this! You make me laugh and want to run to get this book!
I struggle with readers who judge based on the genre, judge based on the author, and judge based on what their peers say. I think you said it perfectly. Dip your toe into something different. You’ll be so surprised. You might find yourself opening the door to a whole new world of characters and authors.
Your review was spot on. Amy Harmon’s writing requires no introduction. It speaks for itself.
I love anything Amy Harmon writes! I don’t even have to know what it’s about. I’ll read it. And that writing class you mentioned? I would totally go. This woman has a true gift and I’m so thrilled that she shares it with the world.
I have heard nothing but great things about this, and just have not had the funds to buy it yet! But it is on my tbr list!
Wow !!! Would love to read this!!!! Thank you for a chance !
I love this post! I wish women (or people in general) could learn to listen to each other. If everyone was the same or thought the same, the world would be boring! I love that you have a mind and offer your opinion. It shows strong character. People have become afraid to use their voice maybe but there are those of us where the “give a damn is busted and the part is on back order”. We speak our mind and that’s refreshing!
I can’t say things a beautiful as you but if I could I would have said it just as you did! I read and loved The Law of Moses and may have drank some cheap wine while reading!!
Awesome blog post! I’ve been wanting to read this one! Thank you!
please pick me! I LOVE Amy Harmon! She’s at the top of my favorites list, along with this book!
I was also blown away on how beautifully well written the book was!! I am completely in awe of her now!!
Hi Tarryn!! I’m not a drinker but I’m an avide reader! I read a lot, lot really xD and I try every book that tell me something at first sight! I love Amy style and I love her writing xX hope to win a copy.
susimarcone@gmail
I haven’t read this book but I hopeful to be able to!!!
i would LOVE this!
I really can’t wait for my college semester to be over so that I can begin reading your books! Best wishes with your writing!!!
Well just so you know. You didn’t lose a reader. I liked your blog thanks for sharing.
I loved this book, I’ve only read two books by Amy Harmon but I’ve absolutely loved them. I really have no words to explain the kind of feelings her book have in me.
This has to be one of the most interesting book reviews ever. And I couldn’t agree with you more!!!
This just made me want to totally start reading this book. Putting in my “to be read” lineup next!
Damn!!! You know how to leave a review *LOL*
But I can’t agree with you more Tarryn! We all have our own taste and opinions and that’s fine.. I mean if we were all the same… *Oh dear* *SMH* I’m the same with wine as you – need it sweet to drink and my book taste has always been in the paranormal (Twilight, The Black Dagger Brotherhood and so on), but have from time to time taking a little detour and pick up a book outside my ‘book-box’ such as the wanted series by Kelly Elliott and the Driven series by K. Bromberg (both great series and great authors) 🙂
So yeah, I know what you mean *LOL*
Thanks for a great post/review Tarryn 😉
Wow just so you know you did not lose a reader here. I liked your blog. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, what a review! Two of my favorite things. Books & wine!
I’ll admit that I have yet to read The Law of Moses. My finger has hovered over that one-click button multiple times but I’m scared to jump. Scared to step out of my box. But this review! It makes me want to step out of every comfort zone I have. Both books and wine included. Thank you, Tarryn Fisher!
Very well said. People need to open their eyes and look, listen, and read everything around them. Be open to different things. I love taken the chance to read something I might not like, but give it a chance anyway. You never know. You might like something new.
i just met Amy over the weekend in Vegas. She was so sweet and incredibly friendly. I loved the Law Of Moses. I told her how incredible of a writer she is, because I had a son who died before his third birthday, and she absolutely nailed the heartache and devastation I felt. In fact I said that I had hoped she hadn’t experienced it first hand because she wrote it so well. Thankfully, she had not. She is just a brilliant writer.
Btw it was fantastic to meet you as well. I’m in love with you’re writing. Sorry Colleen laughed at my huge copy of The Opportunist 😉 and thank you for signing all my things, especially my daughters painting.
Love this post!! I have not read Law of Moses, but it’s on my list!!!
I love this! And it’s exactly how I live in the book world. I’m a trisexual, I’ll try anything once.lol This post makes me want to pick Making Faces back up.
I loved The Law of Moses, and I too love me some crap wine.. it’s cheap, good, and does what it’s supposed to.
Love this post Tarryn! I’m adding The Law of Moses to my TBR List!
I loved that book and I would love to get it as paperback. 🙂
. Damn girl!! Amazing review and truly inspiring.. Thanks for the awesome tips. Totally lov u:)
I must admit that I didn’t read anything you said past your comments about you loving the cheap wine. I wanted to but I really do want to read this book and I like to go in blind. Amy Harmon writes beautifully.
It never ceases to amaze me how we, as human beings, continue to grow and bend, and shape our minds in different ways. Sometimes, usually when you least expect it, life grabs you by the shoulders and gives you a damn good shake, screaming ‘Wake the hell up!’ Whether it comes in the form of an incredible book, or a baby’s smile or the scent of a Magnolia, I love it when it happens and I will never take it for granted.
I don’t know how anyone could give you flack for this. I agree 100%, especially the line about breaking down boundaries. You’re a brilliant woman and I can’t wait to read what you come up with next!
Awesome!!!
I love Amy Harmon books. I am a cheap wine drinker but I have high class taste in books. Amy never disappoints, and this one was supreme. Confession: I never read a Tarryn Fisher book until Never, Never. It blew my mind. And after reading this blog post, I can promise I will read lots of your books because your writing is smart and sassy. My favorite things. Thank you.
I LOVE this story. Hands down, one of my 2014 favorites too. Thank you for your words on this book. I hope that everyone sees them and is inspired to pick up a copy!
jerribaxter.22@gmail.com
Loved this book , one of my top favourites 🙂
Hey Tarryn! Even more excited to read The Law of Moses after reading your post! I recently read Amy’s Making Faces and love her style of storytelling.
This is one of the best books I have ever read and I strongly encourage those who haven’t had the privilege of reading this book to do so immediately!
The Law of Moses is absolutely beautiful storytelling. One of my favorites so far.
I agree with what you say about judging people’s reading taste. I’m guilty of that too, sounding superior at times. At least they read and i need to broaden my horizons!
Such a great book, her writing has a poetic feel to it. Thanks for the chance!! 🙂
klowden13@gmail.com
Thank you for providing this valuable piece of advice for all potential writers. This gives me plenty of inspiration to keep writing and working hard!
I couldn’t agree with you more! Once I read the Law of Moses, I asked myself “what do I do now?” It is a beautifully written book by Amy Harmon that I recommend to anyone and everyone. You have a wonderful taste in books and wine! 😉
Also, keep doing you because you are freaking awesome!
-Huge fan and fellow Law of Moses Advocate
Did you by any chance read “making faces” from her? I started 2014 with this book and its the best book I read in the year! Second goes to “the law of moses”
Amy is an amazing writer!! Hope we will read a lot from her.
By the way thanks for the chance to win a copie
Love your writing. I feel about mud vein how you feel about Amy harmon’s writing. It was my first intro to you and I was hooked. Slammed and Colleen changed reading for me. I loved to read as a kid, but never did it for pleasure as an adult. Until you ladies came along and changed everything. My husband jokes that your books are a for of neglect to our family because I completely ignore everything around me while I’m lost in your world. Thanks for the escape.
Beautiful book, easily one of my top reads this year as well. If only I could write down my thoughts as easily and wonderful as you have.
chua.gavin7@yahoo.com
cory_243@hotmail.com 🙂 thanks
I’ll read just about anything. I don’t get pissed at an author unless it’s poorly written. Meaning that there are LOTS of misspelled words, grammatical errors, run-ons and incomplete sentences. I’m not a professional, but if I can pick up mistakes, you have issues. People don’t get up and bitch about a terrible movie….I don’t see why they think they have the right to attack authors. To each their own! I’m would love to read horror, but I’m too chicken shit! Mud Vein killed me….in a good way!
I loved The Law of Moses. It was a top 10 book for me for 2014 and my favorite of Amy’s books that I have read thus far. I admire the writers you mention in your post. I only have books by Cj left to read.
This book is coming up on my tbr! Glad to hear it’s gonna be awesome!!!
This has been on my TBR list since it came out but you’ve made me curious enough to bump it up. As soon as I finish the Bio on Johnny Rotten while sipping my $7 bottle of Moscato, anyway. I’m keeping it classy over here! Lori’s view on reading is spot on though. I was an anti-indie snob for years and I’m forever grateful for the friend who put me in my place about that.
Sounds like a great book!!! Can’t wait to read this one. Thank you!!
I haven’t had the chance to read any of Amy’s work. I would love to win so I can reverse that statement! I have this book on my “to read” list…please let me move it to the “read” list!!! Thanks for the great blog/comments and the chance at winning a great book.
Hope that last one worked. I just rattled on for a bit about how much I adore 🙂 but I’m not sure if it went thru because it told me that I already comnented.
I had never read anything from Amy Harmon until The Law of Moses and I fell in love with her as a writer!! The whole time I read I felt as if I was there. Loved Loved Loved The Law of Moses.
Just in case I win 🙂

W O W !
Well, that’s amazingly said! Honestly — I didn’t want to read this book before, not really. But now — I want to get out this second, go to the bookstore and get this book.
(And some wine too.)
You’re absolutely right, we should read a little bit of everything. (Also, I don’t see how you’d lose readers over this. If anything, you’d get respect for your honesty.)
And, I’d really like to read The Law of Moses.
beatrix.hartzler@gmail.com
This post is everything I love about you, and everything I love about Amy Harmon. I love that you’re opinionated, and not afraid to share your opinions with your readers. I love that she’s different, and get stories tug at real heart strings with plot lines and details that I’ve not read before. I don’t need sexy guys and weak knees (although that cover model she used filled both roles) to make me really drawn in to a book. In fact, sometimes less is more. Win or lose, thank you both for sharing. I will one day have The Law of Moses on my book shelf.
Suzy’s Five Greats:

I absolutely loved Law of Moses and would love to have this signed on my shelf. Thanks for the chance
My name is Zuray and I am a cheap wine lover too
i loved this book. I went in blind, and when I read reviews after I was shocked that there were others who did not love it equally. I woke my husband up at 2 in the morning trying so hard not to just outright sob. I was shaking the bed. Beautiful review, Fisher.
Tiffanyeb87@yahoo.com
What an incredible way to explain an Amy Harmon Book. I love this woman’s writing, it’s the kind that sticks with you forever.
I love Amy Harmon!! Her novels are so incredible and emotional!! 🙂
We could all do with stepping out of our comfort zone from time to time. It’s what makes life interesting. 🙂
I love this post so much! I have been a reader my entire life. And I read a little bit of everything. I like romance and suspense and YA. I like chicklit and memoirs and paranormal. I like books that challenge me and make me think. And I like books that I can breeze through, that make me forget about real life. I just love to read! Not everything I read is deep or lifechanging. But I really and truly believe that books come into my life exactly when I need them.
Thank you for this post and for encouraging readers to branch out, to try new things. I, for one, will read anything you recommend!
PS- the Law of Moses was one of my top two reads of 2014 and I recommended it to everyone I know!
A wise friend you have. “Don’t criticize what people read. Criticize what they don’t read.”
I do love how you compared types of wines we drink to the types of books we read. You did not lose me as a reader with this post. Although I’ve only read your Love Me With Lies series, Mudvein awaits and after this post so does The Law of Moses. Thank you.
Tarryn, I remember that post. And I agree with you. I think I said that I regret suffering through all the books that were easy to put down. I don’t want to need an bookmark for a book. I want to be consumed, to be completely unable to put it down until The End. Thanks for the chance. And the wine comparison.
Well said! I’m totally going to have to steal the comparison to trying different wines like trying different genres for my next library trustees meeting!
I love YOUR books, so I’m sure I’ll love what you love! lol lots of love.. hehe
I have been hearing about this boo everywhere! I need to check it out!
I read all genres, from thriller, romance, historical novels, etc. Usually, I have to read something funny after a heavy, emotional book. (ie: Mud Vein) I read fluff for two weeks after!
I agree that Alessandra Torre’s “The Girl in 6E” was so good and well written. It was an unexpected read for sure. I will definitely give “The Law of Moses” a whirl.
No flack from me (my soul is safe!), because I agree with everything you said. I’m not a writer, so I have no skill to hone, but I still like to feel like I’m a changed person after I read a book. I like an impact, a lesson, something meaningful. Now I can’t read those weighty, meaty stories all of the time. Too many of them can emotionally drain me. Sometimes I do need some mindless fluff between my Tarryns and my Amys, and I think that’s okay. I read almost every genre. I even kick in some–just a bit–of erotica once in a while, not for thrills but for variety–to experience different authors and writing styles and sometimes I can even wade through and find an actual story. I used to judge erotica, thinking “I don’t need that. I have a husband.” or “Who really reads this stuff? Teenage boys wanting to learn the ropes?” But that’s not fair, and I know that now. And speaking of ropes, I almost passed on Mud Vein because I was getting a BDSM vibe from the cover! I guess the bottom line is that every book has value for someone, if for no one else but the author. I appreciate stories like The Law of Moses because, days after I finish them, I still feel a touch of those emotions I felt while I was reading and I’m still pondering the possibilities.
And of course I’d love a signed copy of the book, so thanks for the chance. Can’t believe I forgot that in my post!
I enjoyed reading your post and I agree with your opinions on how you view a book (writing technique, believable characters and story line). The Law of Moses is actually on my TBR list and am hoping to get to it soon. Everything I hear about the book is amazing and I can’t wait to read it. ape1325@gmail.com
I just finished this book today. I had to constantly rub my chest… my heart while reading. I’m still not sure if it hurt me more or helped me? The deep breath I had to take is the best sign of an amazing read. I’ve read all of Amy’s books and now I feel the need to reread some! Tarryn if you haven’t read Running Bearfoot or Making Faces gear it up! Heather
Loved, loved The Law of Moses! Dialogue is huge for me in books as well. Amy nailed this book! And this posting…I had to scroll back to the top to make sure I was reading the right posting. Wine? What?…Ohh, I see now.
Awesome! Would love to get my hands on this one.

Tarryn,
If I drink wine, I immediately want to go to sleep. After reading your blog, I may have to try the Jam jar (sounds very fruity..lol.
Love what your mother says in the beginning and your statement that it doesn’t really matter what they think. I have the same mind set, I am an adult, if you do not like me, that is okay. We are not on the playground and I do not see you daily, it will not bother me. Guess I will just have less people at my funeral.
Thanks for the chance to win a signed copy of this book, and thank you for taking the time to write your opinion, rather liked or not.

I read this book right after it came out And though it was completely different, which most Amy Harmon books are, it blew me away. Her writing, no matter what she writes is so flawless and has so much emotion and soul. I loved this book and promoted recommended the hell out it to anyone who would listen.
(Email-jessiealderette@gmail.com)
If it made your soul quiver Tarryn, then it is a must read. 🙂 Thanks for the chance.
Dear Tarryn,
After seeing the recommendation by both you and Coleen to read this book I took the plunge. I Must say I do not regret it. Amy has the ability to say A lot with very little words. I am now a big fan of her work and I highly recommend making faces. When she writes about something she does her best to have all the facts straight as a reader that is something that I highly appreciate. It shows me dedication to her craft. Law of Moses is painfully human. It does not Put grief, pain, and lost in a cookie-cutter way. The main characters are both strong and flawed. Overall this is one of my favorite books I have ever read. Thank you for the recommendation. You have no idea how much it touched me.
Thank you for being real! It is always refreshing to get a new perspective. I will definitely be reading The Law of Moses next !
Tarryn! That was an amazing blog post! I couldn’t agree with you more. I would absolutely love a signed copy of The Law Of Moses as it was one of my favorite reads of 2014 and of all time. Thank you for the chance! LitlSuthrnAngl@aol.com
This amazing review has me looking forward to reading The Law of Moses and having a glass of wine. Thank you.
reginalawley@ymail.com
I read this last week on my beloved Kindle. So amazing. The writing, the characters, the plot. All phenomonal. I would love a signed copy for my collection. Jennifer@cnycs.net
Awesome review! Loved the Law of Moses so damn much! Everyone should read it!
Absolutely love this book!!!!
Great review Tarryn, you have a way with words that makes the simplest of stories magical. Amy Harmon’s books are the same. Haven’t had a chance to read this one yet but I sure hope to soon!
I can’t wait to read this!!!
amandarobertson21@yahoo.com
Thanks for the chance to win a signed copy. I read this book and I really loved it!
I too drink cheap wine…barefoot moscato. Don’t judge. But I read Amy Harmon’s books. So it’s all good.

Love love LOVED this book. It was amazing! Would love to have a signed copy.
That book gave me goosebumps all over my body! The book made me crumble and rise at the same time! Cant handle the feels! Loved it!♡
mikka.nea@gmail.com
Thank you for the chance!
Heard nothing but great things about this book. It’s high on my TBR list. 😀
I can honestly say I jump from one genre of book to another. My friend thinks I’m crazy for doing this but I just love so many different types that I don’t care and “The Law of Moses” is one book that I was told was a must read.
I’d love one! I have read Making Faces and Running Barefoot and LOVED them both! The Law of Moses is on my to do list for sure 🙂
Christy82984@yahoo.com
Very well said! Life is boring ready the same thing over and over. Thank you for creating beautiful works and encouraging is all to broaden our tastes.
Thank you for the opportunity to win – mpdoty73@yahoo.com.
Too bad there isn’t an edit button. That’s what you get for trying to type a comment with one hand and take care of your kid with the other. Hell you all know what I meant. *reading *us
Now I need a drink of wine!
Thank you for that recommendation, Tarryn. I’ll make sure I include this book on the 2015 reading challenge that I am doing. The one recommended by Maryse’s book blog and Tammara Webber. My extra challenge within the challenge is to try to find as many 5-star reads over the year.
I will also be following your general suggestions with this challenge. To read away from my comfort zone and what is easy for me. I think you’d love this challenge, but don’t know how to post pictures in here. It is in Maryse’s blog under “what I am reading now”, and I’ve seen it in Pinterest too. I only found it on the 1st of February, but I’ve been able to tick a few of the boxes already with the books I read in January. I’m not going to be cheating like this but some books tick a lot of boxes in one go.
#A book published this year# will be Marrow
#A book by a female author# should be easy, that’s pretty much all I read.
# A mystery or thriller” Mud Vein
# A book with a one-word title” Marrow again
#A book that scares you#
that could be interpreted as a book that you were scared to read in the first place, I have a few of those in my TBR list, or a book that actually made you scared while you were reading it, which of course you could only know after the fact. Following the latter interpretation, Mud Vein again.
#A book you can finish in a day#
not sure, but The opportunist had me reading into the night. So I could say I finished it within a 24 hour period. I literally didn’t not sleep at all. And pulling a complete all nighter is unprecedented since my college days. Some said that the best praise for an author is that he/she stole your sleep. Totally true. You totally did!!!! For nearly a whole week!!!!!!
You actually had me exhausted and sleep deprived for days and loving every single minute of it. Luck is I was having time off from work otherwise I would have made myself almost ill. That’s why reading is not a hobby, it is an adiction. But without knowing you before, one week in January I started with Mud Vein and finished with Thief and had the worst book hangover of my life. It was like winning at Bingo. 4 5-star books one after another. I couldn’t believe my luck. Of course all my lofty plans for my week off ended up unfulfilled, but this week will be unfirgetable.
#A trilogy# Love me with lies
#A book with a love triangle# Ditto
#A book that made you cry# Ha! All four of them. And it was not gentle quiet crying. It was sobbing and sniffling and having to gasp in big gulps of air to try to calm myself down. To the point that I woke up my husband at 4:00 am and he kicked me out of bed to sleep in the guest room (or switch off your Kindle already! )
#A book by an author you’ve never read before # Yes, you!
So, I have just “met” you. But I totally adore you and I will read anything you write. Just waiting for the second part of Never Never, but the first is already in my Kindle. Well, you made me in at Bingo!
This book….HOLY SHIT! Definitely one of my top 5 of all books ever!!!!
Your words, Tarryn, your words! Thank you!!!
Loovvveedd this book and would love to hold it in my hands! Thank you for the chance!
I agree with this post! I loved this book as much as your books:) Dislike boring predictable plots too.
I also read Goldfinch because you suggested it. Please keep sharing your favorite books with us.
I adored The Law of Moses! Amy Harmon is an amazing writer <3

You have left me speechless with this…”whatever it is”. I’d normally call it a review but I feel like that word does not do this post justice. Amy Harmon is one of the best and I couldn’t agree more with everything you wrote…wine comparisons and all of course.
I loved this book and would love a signed copy to add the my new book case.
Wow, that’s an excellent way to put trying new books. I try every year to at least try reading one book that’s outside my “norm”. Recently I read, at the recomendation of PLN facebook group, Me before You and it was so emotional and wonderfully written, I have made all my bookie friends read it. I have heard great things about Law Of Moses and its on my TBR list.
Oooh please pick me! it’s my birthday – it really is! And as a gal with a newly expanded wine palate, may I recommend Frank Brothers pinot nior? It’s one of my faves. I loved this book (one of my most favorites of the year, in addition to Mud Vein) and wholeheartedly loved your review. I adore admiring the work of really sharp gals, who are true wordsmiths. Or as a birthday gift, you and Colleen can sneak me advance Never Never manuscripts…just a suggestion.
Books with excellent word usage, to me, is like eating my Gran’s homemade red velvet cake. I only want it every now and then because it’s special. I want to savor it, and take my time with it. When I usually read, I go for stories and characters (mostly fantasy, but I’m super picky, still). I read books like Mud Vein and A Different Blue, a couple times a month when I need something to feed my brain (aka the good stuff). The Law of Moses has been on my list for a while-just gathering the courage to read it, because reading emotional books takes me days to get over. I reread some parts, or may reread the whole thing if I can handle it-still haven’t been able to reread Mud Vein btw, but I do reference a lot of quotes from it. I make my best friend read it, then we discuss it. Finally, I have to find a new book to read so I can get over it. It’s a process, indeed. So, while I may not read writing technique books as often as I should, those are the books that stay on my favorites list and are the ones that I buy an additional copy of it on paper, so I can add it to my book shelf:)
“You can miss the finer points of this book if your taste buds are attuned only to one type of wine”
That’s exactly what I thought about this book. Some people were too quick to dismiss it and all I can say is it’s their loss. The Law of Moses is one of my top pick of 2014 🙂
Wow! I so have to read this book if you liked it that much. It’s always nice to get recommendations from your favorite authors. Can’t wait for marrow to come out.
Love Liz 🙂
This was an absolutely wonderful post! And, I might add so damn true. The reason I read is to push my boundaries, to take sips of other things that you “think” you won’t like! I absolutely loved The Law of Moses, and if I knew what I know now about reading that book beforehand, I probably would never have picked it up. As it stands now. It is number one on my list of books to push people to read now.
I absolutely loved this story and would like to have a signed copy of it.
I thought this was beautiful. I hope your opinion gives people something to think about. Writing is an art that should be cherished and worked hard for. We all know love is the same way.
Thanks!

Thanks for the chance. I absolutely adored The Law of Moses – Recommended it to Mum & sister (who don’t normally like the kind of books I read) & they both loved it. My mum then went & recommended to my Aunt’s book club who have all raved about it. Since then they have all purchased Amy Harmon’s other books.
Loved this post about TLoM. Definitely a different way to express to your readers to “broaden their horizons”.
Thanks for the chance. I haven’t read it yet but it’s on my radar.
I need to read this one.
Well said Tarryn!! Amy’s books are masterpieces. Her books work their way into my heart and soul. Every single one. Thanks so much for the chance!!
I am up for the challenge. I need to expand my genre list to something other than romance, and suspense. PS nothing wrong with strawberry Zinfandel
I have not had the chance to read this yet. My email is loovebunnie@gmail.com. Thanks for the chance.
I loved The Law of Moses. Your review was spot on. The other books u mentioned are among my favorites. I have read all of your books. Also, I have my husband hooked on you. ❤️
I’d love to win a copy of this book, if it’s open to UK peeps! 🙂
Law of Moses and Making Faces are both on my top 10 favorite books of all time. Amy Harmon is a genius. This book gutted me and out me back together. I adored it.
I hope to taste this beautiful wine/book you speak of very very soon.
I’ve been wanting this book!!! 🙂
This book not only introduced me to Moses but to Amy as well. After reading this book I have been on a mission to read all of her books! You are amazing Amy!!! Keep it up!!
This. A thousand times this. I’m trying to read outside of my comfort zones and I’m finding myself craving books like The Law of Moses. That book was beautiful. Actually I’m not sure there are words to describe how I felt about that book. This post only made me love you more Tarryn.
What a well written book review. To tell the truth i had to read it twice because i was reading it so fast to see what you thought of the book. Well done.
It was a great book. Thanks for the opportunity to win a signed copy.
I wish I could really describes what I’m feeling right now. My face is wet and my heart is fat, and I am so humbled and grateful in this moment that my life feels perfect. This feeling will pass, and when it does, I’ll come back and re-read. I’m leveled in the most satisfying way.
<3
Enjoy. You so deserve it, Amy!
Amy is such a phenomenal writer. I haven’t gotten the chance to read this one yet but have read all of her other books. I agree her writing style is superb and her stories really take you on a journey.
I freaking adore this post!! So many times while reading The Law of Moses I was brought to tears by “holy sh!t” moments. This booked OWNED me and I recommend it all the time because it is a story that deserves to be heard!
I would like to read a book like a glass of Pinot noir please and thank you very much !!!
I stepped out of my genre with Mud Vein a while back. U hooked me. My own review of TLoM was……well, 5 stars, but I was almost speechless….and I’m never at a loss for words. This review is why you will gain more readers, NOT lose.
I too am guilty of literature snobbery. I huff, roll my eyes, and make disparaging remarks whenever a patron of my library checks out James Patterson, Nicholas Sparks or goddamned Fifty Shades of Grey. But it’s true, at least they’re reading and I can attempt to steer them toward more daring choices.
Loved this book!! Need a copy of this for my “trophy” shelf. That is my bookcase full of books that no one is allowed to open because of the risk of a cracked spine
No hate hear, and no loss of reader either, I firmly believe that Variety is the Spice of Life and without it we would all be so boring…
Don’t like admitting this but I have bounced a few authors in the past due to their writing style and story line, lack of editing etc. One in particular springs to mind, but I wont go any further with that.
I really enjoyed your blog post!
In my opinion, you will not lose readers from this post…you will gain them. Well said Tarryn Fisher. I love your “tell it like it is way”…it is real, it is true and it is refreshing. You are awesome.
The Law of Moses was actually one of my 2014 favs too. Very glad that you liked it as well. Thanks for the give away!! perez_112806_ctl@hotmail.com
Well said. I wish all the reviews were just as careful to keep from ruining the storyline. I learned my lesson to be more careful about reading reviews before hand though.
Thank you for this. I enjoy hearing authors perspective as there is a little scrutiny. 🙂
I would love to have a signed copy I have not read it yet!! Thanks for the chance! BTW you are amazing I loved all of your books!! Amazingly talented!!
Thank you for this eye opening post. I have steered clear of books that I feel aren’t my “norm” but I see now that it won’t hurt to try and say that I did.
I love that u (such a great author) can give another great author (Amy Harmon) a great review- When I come across wonderful book like the law of Moses I wish I could have pay more attention in my English class and be able to write a decent review for her magnificent book.
So thank you and I hope I can get a tangible book
Couldn’t agree more. The Law of Moses was one of my top reads for 2014.
I am a huge Amy Harmon fan. In fact her book Making Faces is my all time favorite book. I would love to win The Law of Moses.
YES!!! I feel so proprietary over this book. Like, I almost wish nobody else knew about it because I want this kind of special for myself. However, since you gave me Caleb, I think I can share. I’ll hate doing so, but I’ll give it a go.
As always Tarryn you nailed this review. I respect your soul eating, no holds barred opinions. You truly stand out from the crowd and I appreciate that so much.
And this book. Oh this book. I just can’t say enough about it. I’m just glad I have another book that I can reread over and over again.
Thanks for the chance
I’m not a wine drinker (nor do I know anything about wine) so you kind of lost me with the wine talk, but the rest of what you said has made me push The Law of Moses further up my TBR!
Very well said Tarryn. I agree with you people trying different things every once in a while. I tell my son the same but with food. I make him try everything (whether he wants to or not lol), if he doesn’t like it, then i wait a year or two and make him give it another shot. People change over time and so do their tastes. Someone might love to read smut only and they might have tried other genres to find it boring. But a few years down the line, they might come to live and breathe that very same genre they happened to hate 3 years before. So i agree with you 100%. Aside from that, now you made me want to read this book like ASAP !! Thanks for the recommend =)
I think The Law of Moses was one of the best books I have read, a 5 star read for me. I have loved all of Amy Harmon’s books, she seems to be able to take you away, in to her world and you are happy to get lost there. The end always comes much to quickly for me.
Oh I couldn’t agree with you more!! I feel like my life is enriched every time I read one of Amy’s books. I love how she uses spirituality of all kinds, and it has really broadened my appreciation for the depth of her work. My daughter who is in the Navy has really become a fan of her work as well! Thank you for a great review about a great book and an even greater author.
i couldn’t have said it better myself. Bravo
Absolutely beautiful and amazing book!!! Tarryn you nailed it also with your beautiful and unique review of The Law of Moses!! Amy Harmon is such an a eloquent author, she really has such a unique and perfect way of telling a story!! I LOVE everything she has ever written….
I really enjoyed this post as well & kudos to Lori Worely for her statement “don’t criticize people for what they read, criticize them for what they don’t read” that’s just perfect!!! Now I will go and try something other than my beloved Cabernet Savignon, as I have already tasted every bit of Amy Harmon’s writing already.
I love reading all types of genre. I like to switch it up. It keeps me from getting bored with similar books and keeps my mind open so I can find new authors, and different style of writing.
Also I enjoy wine, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio are my favorite.
I love this review. I have heard many people rave about the Law of Moses but until this review I haven’t felt the itch to read it. As soon as I finish my current read I will be scratching that itch. Also, Pinot Noir is my favorite wine so…
Is replying to your own comment the same as “liking” your own FB status? Whatever. I just realized you didn’t really even give a synopsis and yet I still just know that I need to read this book. Well played, Ms. Fisher. Well played.
I heart you Tarryn, and your white trash wine tastes 🙂 would love a chance at the signed copy of this book. Thank you for the opportunity
Bravo! I am a lover of wine, both fine and everyday. I am a lover of books, of stories, and especially Amy Harmon. Her books are soul stirring and unforgettable. More so when consumed with a glass of my favorite Pinot. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of one of my favorite books from last year!
I can not wait to read this book! Thank you for your honesty!
Army Harmon is her own genre! From running bearfoot to a different blue and onto making faces, each so special and unique in such a real way. I have law of moses on my kindle tbr and now I must read it. Loved the review. Thanks for the chance!
You did not lose me as a reader. I agree that everyone should read all of the genres before judging. I used to read super fluff before I read the deeper well written novels. I did this on purpose because I knew once I read the fine quality of writing in those books such as Outlander or All the Light We Cannot See I would be ruined and would not be able to enjoy the super fluffy, repetitive, shallow character type books anymore. I’m glad I did it this way so that I am a more well rounded reader. I haven’t read Law of Moses yet but if it’s anything like Making Faces I’m sure I will love it. And Mrs. Harmon is such a sweet wonderful woman when I met her this past weekend. I wish I had more time to speak to you Tarryn but I didn’t want to upset the other ladies in line. Loved your leather pants!
Amen!!! I could not have said it better! But then again that’s why you’re the writer. I completely agree on the writing technique being most important to me, that’s what I look for, what draws me in while storyline is in the back burner. I have read a few stories that have done that for me. Dark Duet by CJ Roberts come to mind where the story line was definitely not what kept me reading, at least not the first book, but the actual writing technique. Your Love me with Lies series and Mud Vein were raw, left
Me crying for weeks to the core for how real they felt. I have not read The Law of Moses yet – it is on my TBR – but I have read A different Blue and Making Faces by Amy Harmon and tha just speaks for itself when I gave 5+ stars to these books to know that I wour read more from this author.
I can’t wait to meet you both in Austin Next Month! 🙂
Well said!! The Law of Moses is on my TBR list. I have enjoyed Amy Harmon’s writing and I can’t wait to read this one. A quick shout out to Colleen who I love and have read every single book she has written 🙂
Now you really make me want to read it! I’ve been dying to read this since I saw the cover design and the positive reviews. Thank you for the opportunity! 🙂
Can’t wait to read this book! I’ve heard so many good things about it. Thanks for the chance!!! 🙂
Thank you so much Tarryn. You are such an amazing person. Will be praying more of your books and giveaways and news and everything about you. And your babies are so so cute. I love them
Wow. It’s amazing how it takes someone else to verbalise (type) your thoughts for you to even realise they’re ARE your thoughts. This blog post included 2 of my favourite things – wine and Amy Harmon 😛 thank you.
Well said tarryn! I loved this book as well. And I’m currently “taking a sip” of something out of my genre.
Agree completely !! Experience is Growth.
Loved your post. I agree with you completely that Amy Harmon is brilliant. And it’s okay to read trash if that is what you choose to do, but always add something new to your mix of lit. Thanks for your comments, I found nothing offensive AND it took me back to the days when I was drinking twist cap wine!
Wow. Well, this post definitely made me want to read the book! Thanks for the great giveaway!
I concur. I thought TLoM was extraordinary. I was browsing books in B&N the other day, and I thought it was really sad that Amy’s books (and yours) weren’t on the shelves. A host of people really are missing out on some beautiful experiences.
I read TLOM and couldn’t put into words what I felt. I love Amy’s books! Your blog made perfect sense to me. Although everyone has different reading tastes, I don’t think anyone could say anything bad about this book. Just incredible. I think I’ll go re read it now.
OMG…I could not agree with this post more! The writing is what makes the story, not the actual story. It’s the writing. So few writers can do this (you and Amy are two) and that’s what separates the rock stars from the rest. I won’t lie and say I read the “Pinto Noir” everytime but damn, don’t you know when you do. The heavens just sing. You are right The Law of Moses was one of those books. So good. Thanks for the review and you are right, spot on.
You and I are soul sisters. We have to be. I have a bottle of Jam Jar sitting on my fridge (b/c that’s where I store the good stuff) calling my name. A good book will make you uncomfortable, it’ll make you question everything, and it’ll leave you feeling as if you were just royally screwed. You know this as you are the best at doing it.
The Law of Moses was a phenominal book. I believe it to be Amy Harmon’s best work. If they know what is good for them, they’ll read it.
Tkwhite1121@gmail.com
I loved the Law of Moses! Your blog post is also simply amazingly written. I am NOT a writer, but an avid reader. You nailed it when you stated that writing technique comes first.
Amy nailed it it the Law of Moses. I have seen some complaints on the genre of this book on and telling people not to waste their time. Those people that listen, are missing out on a great story!
First. I want more blog post because I love when you write and what you write. Second. Told you to read Torre forever, in that thread. That was my favorite Tarryn thread.
Thank you for this! It’s great! Also, I was a cheap sweet wine drinker…tried to become a more ‘sophisticated’ wine drinker, but Jam Jar shiraz forced me back to the dark side! I love love love this wine!
I am currently in the middle of reading Law of Moses. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I just finished part one and am ready to dive into part two. There are not many authors that grab me and pull me in, but Amy Harmon is quickly raking right up there with some of my favs. Time is wasting….time to get back to reading!!!
Law Of Moses is now one of my all time favorites! I would be honored to have a signed copy!!! I do not have a signed copy of any book, I have never reached out and asked for one! Have never been interested in one until now!
This book touched my heart, my soul. I believed her words. I felt as if her characters lived, their pain was real. Their pain and joy became mine.
Amazing work. I loved every word! I read it in a day…. I COULD NOT put it down, not that I wouldn’t put it down…. I simply could not do it. I even sent a message via Facebook to Amy around 1:30am in the middle of my reading when I realized his baby boy was standing at the foot of his bed to let her know she had just ripped my heart out lol!
I look forward to so much more!
Jackie
Loved the review and the book. Can’t reiterate enough how great of a storyteller Amy Harmon is(and you too). Wish more people would give her books a chance 🙂
Fallonmccrea@hotmail.com
You could not of put it better.
I love this post. I love Amy Harmon, she’s a wonderful woman inside and out. I’d love to be half the woman she is when i grow up.
Wow. I wrote the word wow first and now feel like an idiot after you wrote all of that awesomeness. I read all genres. Of course I like the tastes of certain ones more than others but there is nothing quite like opening a book that you KNOW the stoey will tough you are open your eyes to something new. Which is why I thank you for posting about such wondet books and authors such as Faber, McCourt, Tartt and now, Harmon. I would love a copy of The Law of Moses. Have not read it yet and it is on my list. Thank you for the opportunity and for your wit.
^^ I really do know how to spell. My phone hates me. Yeah. That’s it.
You are awesome!! Caraeckerfield@gmail.com
If I didn’t want to read The Law of Moses before, I’d definitely be putting it on my tbr list now! And I kind of feel ashamed for not having yet it yet…
What an awesome synopsis and explanation. Well written. And, you made Amy Harmon cry…. Good tears. That’s awesome! Looking forward to meeting you in Austin!
I love this post! I’ve read all of Amy’s books and she is definitely one of my favourite writers, I don’t even have to read the description, before downloading when she releases a new book, because I know it will be brilliant.
I ♡ Law Of Moses definitely one of my top reads of 2014
Beautiful review! I haven’t read The Law of Moses yet, but I’ve read her other books and this just makes me so excited to read it! 🙂
Amy Harmon is flippin’ amazing!!! Thanks for the chance!!!
Oh, I love a good pinot noir! I also have The Law of Moses on my TBR list. Tarryn, after your extremely well-written review, sans spoilers, (thank you from the bottom of my heart) I must now pull a bottle of pinot from my wine rack and dive into this book. Who wouldn’t want to immediately read something that has the ability to make one’s soul quiver. I personally live for those moments. I absolutely adore you when you use your words, Ms. Fisher.
im so glad you went ahead and put this out there, Tarryn! I remember that post well and I will admit I was offended by it, being that I got started on my love of erotica with 50 Shades. I’ll also admit that I was a little mad at you for that post. I had you pictured as this badass, hot writer that I connected with and thought we could be best friends in another life, although you’d be awfully ashamed of my shoe collection. I remember thinking and maybe even saying out loud “what a bitch” and “how can she say that? I know she has to have other writer friends that took offense to this!?”.
But of course I got over it. I never stay mad about things for long anyways. I got over it mainly because it made me think outside the box. It was Mud Vein that made me yurn to read more books that made me think. It was also “The Opportunist” that led me to read my first Amy Harmon book “A Different Blue” and after reading “The Law of Moses” it took me a long time to even think about picking up another book because I knew nothing would compare to it. Then you and Colleen released “Never, Never” and that was all it took to break my dry spell, so to speak. Anyways I know I’m rambling, but what I am trying to say is I still think you are awesome and this is the absolute best book review I’ve ever read!! And I also like the cheap fruity wine. And you’re my favorite writer because you are real and honest and I respect that most in people.
Great review.! When I first started The Law of Moses, I was uneasy about it. I was freaked out; the crack baby who say “a certain type of people”. NO BUENO!! I thought, this book it’s for me. I’m into romance books not paranormal books, but it was too late. I was already hooked, the characters was likable, and I was intrigued about Georgia and Moses’s chemistry. The writing was amazing and Amy Harmon’s beliefs is parallel to mines. I fell in love with her as a writer. I moved on to another one of her books, Making Faces and I was a goner!
You’re brilliant. Just thought you should know.
After this review if I hadn’t already purchased The Law of Moses I would go and one-click that bad boy. as it is it just moved to the top of my TBR list. Thank you for your review. I always seem to appreciate the book more when an author recommends a book.
That was one of the most eloquent book reviews I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Well said Tarryn.
The thing is, the writing you, Colleen (she doesn’t know me, but if she did I’m sure we’d be on a first name basis), and Amy Harmon produce is like having a glass of the most exquisite wine that’s rich in both flavor and texture. Unfortunately it’s unicorn wine, so it’s next to impossible to find wine of that quality anywhere you look. However, the fact that you have to wait for it and yearn for it, and drink the crappy cheap stuff in the interim, is what makes it so damn exquisite.
I’ve read all of Ms. Harmons book, this was my favorite so far. I cried almost straight through from pushes 151 to 300.
Wow… I was just talking about this a few minutes ago. About how much we might be losing because we don’t let ourselves experience new… Whatever the new is, but just allow ourselves to have at least a glimpse of something we are not used to. And the new Amy, and yourself, provided me once, changed my life, my reading life first, but so much more before it. Well done Amy… You deserve this amazing review! Well said Tarryn… That’s why I admire you more and more every day! (Wish I could have some smartass comment to do, but this post is so brilliant, I’ll leave this as it is!)
Okay, okay.. This post about wines and The Law of Moses was great! I haven’t read The Law of Moses so thanks for this PERSUASION (I had a hard time connecting wines and The Law of Moses). What I liked about your post is experiencing the unfamiliar. Yes, I’ve read some books that is not my genre. At first I felt there’s something’s off, but then I finished it was okay. Point of realization, maybe. That there’s more outside my world. And now I’m enjoying reading random genres—let’s say I’m surprising myself. So thanks Tarryn, love your review! 🙂
I agree with what your saying. I am a very picky reader too, and I find that with a lot of people hopping on the bandwagon and publishing books, there aren’t near as many good books out there anymore. Finding one with great writing style and believable characters is like finding a needle in a haystack. I think a lot of people are sticking with only authors they know and are too scared to branch out because they have in the past and it wasn’t good. We all have the right to read what works for us. I consider you one of those that are on the “safe list.” Thank you for this great article/review!
I’m a school teacher, kids between 6 and 9, and what I hate is this line: “They need to read this book.” I really hate it. For me is simple: They need to read what they like.
Why I’m talk about this? Easy.
I want to create individual minds. I want kids who can read everything because they are free. Reading is freedom. Reading is our heart and soul together.
Be able to choose erotica or drama without being ashamed because the title isn’t Anna Karenina. Be able to be free without prejudices.
And Amy Harmon is so different from so many readers. I want a generation of free readers.
People who read just for the pleasure of it.
A generation with respect for the great writers of our history but with power to read what they like outdoors because they know what they are. They don’t care if people think they are less because the story isn’t worthy.
Free minds.
Sorry for my English. My main language is portuguese.
I love this post, Tarryn. I recently rated a book with five stars. Now, I did not like the love interest. However, that character and the story was so well-written, I was able to overlook it, and still completely enjoy the book. All the characters had flaws, and I think that was a lot of the appeal.
Yours and Colleen’s books have spoiled me, so now I am really picky about what I like! lol. I’m ok with that though. It makes me more appreciative when I do find a hidden gem of a book.
I will definitely have to read a book by Amy Harmon, as well as books from the other authors you mentioned above.
#cheapwinerocks
Oh! I forgot to leave my email address: It’s
annaberryreads (at) gmail (dot) com 🙂
I also loved The Book of Moses. Besides well written, the story held me from cover to cover. I felt like I knew the characters, I could relate to them. The story made me think and it made me feel. That being said, I have loved all of the Amy Harmons books I have read, and I think I’ve read 5.
“..because she believes in something other than tattooed biceps and a long, experienced dick.” LOL!!
THIS IS THE BEST REVIEW! SO SPOT ON! LOVED YOUR ANALOGY 🙂
I AGREE, THE LAW OF MOSES IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I’VE EVER READ. AMY HARMON IS AN AMAZING WRITER <3
YASH.THEMEANDERINGSOUL@GMAIL.COM
We can always count on you to tell us what you really think. Agree or disagree I love that about you.
So just FYI, I am already a fan of Amy Harmon. No need to ridicule or chastise. You can thank Luisa for that. She’s awesome at introducing me to authors I love (including you). I haven’t had time to read Amy’s new book yet so I would be THRILLED if you picked me for one of those copies. I need to sink my teeth into The Law of Moses.
I am so excited to read this. Loved your article!
This. This is what makes great writers. Writing up another author that doesn’t necessarily write the same as you, but you know and can appreciate the beauty in the writing and the characters. I for one love you both and kind of have a girl crush on Amy Harmon. She is always thinking outside the box and writes wonderfully. Thank you for spotlighting her today, Tarryn. I LOVE you too!
I love it when authors read each other’s books and take the time to review them. Both you and Amy are geniuses at this writing thing. I recently listen to Running Barefoot and I was mesmerized by her writing style… you’re so right about the characters driving the plot. Not sure if you read that one, but I’m sure you would love it. You both don’t rush the writing, you treat it as the art that it is and, in the end, your stories become each a masterpiece. Love you both and all your books!
love you & your books. you’re amazing!
Well said. Sometimes we rely too much on the reviews and what other people think. Why not try something new and form an opinion yourself? If you don’t like it, you don’t have to read anything like it again. Or you can end up falling in love with it and only hope to find another that will impact you in the way Law of Moses did for me.
love this post .. And couldn’t agree more.. You gotta try new things, cause you will never know if you will like it or not
It has officially made it to the top of my TBR list. Thank you for the honest review.
Love your blog and I love Moses. I’d love a signed paperback. Jennifermcbrm@yahoo.com
I completely agree with your comment about writing technique being so important. I love reading new authors, and as a blogger, I always try to keep an open mind. There are many authors who do rush to publish, and assume that since it’s self published that maybe they don’t have to work as hard. Editing is a huge problem with a lot of authors in this field, and I find myself wanting to correct books I read to help the author out. Obviously there is a learning curve, and authors usually get better the more they write, but some don’t take the time to learn. I do love a good story line and characters, but if the writing is bad, it completely overpowers the amazing creativity that some people possess. I have yet to read this book myself, but I have heard so many wonderful things about it. I’ve definitely added it to my TBR. I thoroughly appreciate your honesty, and you haven’t lost me as a reader. Thanks for sharing this.
Tarryn you made it into my 5 greats because of this post. The Law of Moses is one of the best book i read and it’ll be a honour and a privilege to have them in my hands. Praying to be chosen.
ps: Loved the comparison between pinot noir and the book. =D
Tarryn, I have to be honest I fell in love with your creative writing but loved you even more from your brutal honesty. I am a passive person and tend not to stick up for myself therefore get walked all over. I can only wish I could be 100% honest with people on how I feel like you do. It truly means a lot to hear your opinions on different books and I for one love to read the variety of different ones. The reason I fell in love with The Dark Duet Series and the reason I wanted to throw my kindle while reading The Opportunist. I loved both these for the frustration they gave me and the feelings of being able to have my own opinion on them. Keep up the writing as I’ll always be a dedicated PLN!!
Thank you for this post! I have neglected to read some books because they are not my normal reads, but I will try to expand my knowledge now!
I agree with this post 100% and yes Amy nailed it. I also have not acquired a taste for fine wine and love my $9.00 bottle of Cavit.
Brilliant. The advice to not criticize what people read but rather what they don’t. Gold. (Very smart, Lori.)
Thank you for this post – I am sooo with you when it comes to character. Give me flaws, personality, humor or wisdom. If I love your characters I can overlook you story because it’s the people that make my life truly interesting.
Great post Tarryn.
I love you for your bravery; in this post, in other posts you have written, in your books. I envy the way that you embrace the risks and just go for it. Thank your mom for raising such a fierce daughter.
so I have never actually had wine nor will I but that being said I totally got your description so thank you for that witty take. I would also like to say that I am sorta a super fan of Amy’s which is sorta hard to admit it makes me sound and feel a little crazy which I promise I am totally sane ( I do have 3 sons so maybe slightly crazy). I love her books I love her writing I love how you lose yourself in her story and by the end of it you actually find yourself and you are better for the journey. I hope for her one day her characters are as well known as a half giant who appears to take a little boy to hog warts but even if she’s not she is to me. Thank you for posting this I keep thinking its time to read Law of Moses then time gets away from me now after this review I feel like shame on me I’m missing out. I swear I feel about Amy Harmon like Hugh grants sister does on Notting Hill you know like she thinks her and Anna Scott could best friends if only they meet well that’s me haha. Loved all your thoughts.
That was a great post! I loved The Law of Moses. It was not the story I was expecting.
I agree. Amy’s books are exquisite. She writes and weaves emotions into her words and characters, without the need to include steamy intimate scenes, yet they come even more intense, and so deep and so real that I always find myself prepared to curl in for an emotional roller coaster ride. Every book of hers ended up in the list that I recommend my people to read.
Law of Moses was the first book I’ve read by Amy Harmon and I will forever be a loyal fan girl!
This post is better written than some books I’ve read. Ha. We all have different tastes, and I agree with your friend Lori that we shouldn’t judge anyone on what they enjoy reading.
I’m constantly switching between YA and NA(though I’ve lost the taste for most lately), but I recently started expanding my reading horizons and I’ve found a new genre to love(adult thrillers).
Just like everything you write, those are great words! I think that this is something we as fans don’t even realize. Sure we brag or complain about the words we read, but we rarely think about the work put into writing those words. Thank you for the effort you put into writing. Also, thank you for pointing out the writing of another author so that your fans can enhance their reading palate as well!! I had heard of “The Law of Moses” before, but hadn’t really made an effort to read it, it is now on my TBR list. Thank you Tarryn!
couldn’t have said it better my self! Loved this book and it is on my top 5 list of favorite books of 2014!
I was on the fence about this book before I read your review. I will be reading it now. Thanks
I love that you’re not afraid to state your opinion. I love that you aren’t just saying what you think your readers want to hear. Thank you for the giveaway! The Law Of Moses was a phenomenal read and I’d love to have a signed print copy on my bookshelves.
Very Well said. I agree with you, I want a book that has well thought out sentences. I just read a book by a published author, who’s book is now a movie, and I got so frustrated at the incomplete sentences that made no sense. It took me about a week and a half to read both books in the series when normally, a good book, I can knock out in a day or two. Writing and then the story line, and of course dialogue between the characters, are my order!
I loved Law of Moses!
You’re not one to “beat around the bush” when it comes to saying how you feel. That’s why I’m a huge fan!
I still have not read this book, *runs and hides for cover* so thanks for posting this, I’m off to “one click” now.
i agree whole-heartedly about her writing style. Every once in awhile, you step outside your comfort zone and find something that makes you pause and take notice. I love discovering authors this way. Thank you for putting it out there and giving readers the proverbial “smack upside the head”. *smile*
I agree that people should always be open minded. Even if you try a different reading genre once & find that it isn’t what you enjoy or it’s hard to get into, that’s okay because you can check it off your list & move on. Who knows, for some people who hate erotica now down the road they could have a switch flipped & be intrigued by it. Never say never! Great post! =)
I love raw and honest reviews and this one just made me want to read The Law of Moses even more. All of Amy’s books a great and if this one received such good review from an amazing writer like you… I know it’ll be awesome.
Thanks for giving me the push to read this one. I had started it but didn’t fall into it like I did some of Amy’s other books but I am going to dive back into this one and give it the attention it deserves.
I think you said it all! I love it when I try something new and different and I was in awe of this book!
I loved “Making faces” so I couldn’t wait to read this book by Amy Harmon. She’s truly amazing.
This is, quite possibly, the best blog post ever written. I admire your writing and the daring paths you take when you create your stories. I crave stories with unique characters, honed writing and sometimes even a little sass.
The fact that you took two of my favorite things (cheap wine and good books) and compared them…it made my day. I cannot afford to go out and by this book right now but I guarantee you that I WILL BUY IT.
Thank you for being so blunt and for being a leader and not a follower. I bow to you, Ms. Fisher. I kind of want to be you when I grow up (oh wait..I’m 30…can I get a do-over?)
You have an amazing way with words and I love your honesty. Oh, you also have me wanting to read The Law of Moses, so your review worked. Thanks!
This is on the top of my to-be read books. Would love a signed copy!
Completely agree Tarryn. Law of Moses was an amazing read!
I really liked this. I try to dabble in different every now and then just to shake things up but I loved the way you described it and related it all back to this book. I myself am a one wine kind of girl but even though I’ve found the one I think I still buy other bottles just to taste them. I’ve yet to read any of Amy’s books but I continually hear great things about them. I think it’s time for me to sit my usual glass down and pick up a new one. Thank you, Tarryn.
I’m reading this now! Love it so far.
That was an amazing review! The Law of Moses sounds like a book that I need in my life. Thank you for your honest opinion.
Well written blog post. Amy Harmon’s writing reminds us of our love for reading. That the author doesn’t just tells you her story. She allows you to live it. And I love a writer that pushes their reader. Pushes them to go places where they never thought they could. Make them think things they never thought they would. To be challenged. For me that’s what reading is about.
I agree to always take a sip of new wines… even when leather is one of the flavors. Believe me, I will always remember that horrid wine and it’s $67 price tag! Thank you for the review.
I have on occasion snubbed books by the cover..I’m a visual person!
I absolutely LOVED The Law of Moses…what you said about it being subtle but yet vibrant with its descriptive words is so on point! I didn’t want the story to end…I wanted to somehow join that community and be part of its flawed yet beautiful struggle. I fell in love with the characters. I have “pushed” this book onto at least 5 other readers and not one has been disappointed. Indeed, well done, Amy Harmon, indeed!
Good writing is SO important to me, it is one of the reasons I love you. You are a phenomenal writer. I haven’t read The Law of Moses yet but this review makes me feel like I need to bump it up my TBR list! Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
This is one of the most brilliant things I’ve ever read. I’m constantly trying to get this point across to people, and now I can just direct them to this post. 🙂
This post is great! I’m also a sweet wine drinker. I have a bottle of Jam Jar in the fridge 🙂 I’m looking forward to reading The Law of Moses. I’ve had it on my tbr list since before it was released. I think it’s time I move it up on the list.
Not only did I put “The Law of Moses” on my wish-list/to-be-read list but also “The Girl in 6E”!
I, like you, am a cheap wine lover. All though recently I have “upgraded” to Barefoot Pinot Grigio as being my new favorite (a wine others have at least heard of, but doesn’t break the bank) I am still not a fan of the more expensive, supposedly “better” wines. When it comes to what I read lately I have been broadening my horizons – reading more outside of my comfort genre of fantasy with a superb heroine.
By doing so I found the amazing world of self-publishers and so much reading gold that I now have a to-be-read list that’s over 200 books long (yourself and Colleen Hoover are among the list of new authors I’ve found and fell in love with). I also believe that it has helped me immensely in my own writing, forcing me to expand my characters and my plot lines and to be more critical in my editing.
You are right in encouraging your readers (both of your books and blog) to expand their tastes, at least to try something new and different. You never know what new favorite you could be missing by refusing to at least sample something new!
Thank you for that…I’ll definitely be reading it. I was planning to anyhow, but now it will jump up a few in my TBR’s…I prefer tequila to wine, what’s your take on that I wonder.
Tarryn, I love your description of different palletes. I love to read and discover new gems outside my usual genre choice. I’ve heard so much about this book but I’m definitely going to read it now based on your review. Tell your Mom that you didn’t lose this reader. 😉
~Jen
I so agree with you. I used to criticize my friends for reading and loving a book that I truly, madly, and deeply loathed. But then I thought to myself, ” At least they’re reading!” I still hate thosr books because they are so poorly written, but I don’t judge anymore. I smile and nod.
Tarryn, Thank you so much for the chance!
mmalavec(at)med(dot)umich(dot)edu
You have peaked my interest. Adding to my TBR list.
Thank you for this! I read this book and…. wow its so amazing. I would love a signed copy.
I would love to win a signed copy! It would be awesome to own… And I would get to brag to all of my friends about how much cooler I am than them
you make me want to drop the book I’m reading and run out and get this book! I LOVE your review and I’m anxiously waiting to see if I might win before I do ! awesome review !
I LOVE THIS!!! You said it so well. I’m really not sure what else there is to add. Thank you for the inspiration. I love to read contemporary, NA, YA. And most are Indie authors. But I’m glad I do step out of that box at times. I love Stephen King. I am a big chicken s**t but his books take me to new places. As do The PA and dystopia I love. So I love this review because it’s my thoughts exactly. I have not read The Law of Moses yet. It’s sitting in my wish list not too far from the top. But I can promise you you just inspired me to move it to my library and to the top of my TBR list. A review like this is exactly what sets my undeniable need to one click a book in a hot frenzie! Thanks. 🙂
I loved this book!!! I read it on a plane and CRIED without shame. The person next to me probably thought I was insane (I am). I’ve read almost all of her books and they never cease to amaze me or blow me away with her characters, writing, and message. I love that she puts her beliefs into her work and I respect an author so much more when there is a higher power theme in it. Have you read Making Faces? MY FAVORITE of hers!! Oh my gosh!!!! (I’m sure you’ve read it…right?…right?!)
I have yet to read this one and from the review, I am pretty sure I’m going to like it. This one is waiting on my mini ipad for me to read.
Wow! This is the most response inducing book (wine?) review I’ve read in ages. Mission accomplished, I now want to enjoy this book with a glass of wine (the price point of which shall be irrelevant). Thank you!
I have not read this book. This particular author is unknown to me. I am always trying to find other books to read. If I win this it will be one I try on your recommendation. It will be me putting myself out there into a totally different world. I’m always willing to try anything so here it goes!!
There’s two reasons why I read this post: 1) It’s from you, Tarryn Fisher and I’ll probably spend my who life wanting to read more of your words. And 2) because we have something in common, the absolute love for The Law of Moses.
Amy Harmon is one of my favorite authors. She’s a genuine person and obviously, a literary genius. There’s something in her voice (books) that always left me with a week or two book hangover. 2014 has been a great year for me because of her. Infinity+One and The Law of Moses both from her was on my 2014 Top Reads. It was really fantastic to read a blog post like this. Amy Harmon’s works need to be read and appreciated more. She deserves to be recognized.
Thank you so much Tarryn for sharing this. This means a lot for a Amy Harmon fan/reader like me. (And I really love the way you expressed yourself. You rock!)
– Anjeli (am.demagante@gmail.com)
I’m not commenting to win, because I have already read the book and of I loved it! I want someone who hasn’t read it to win, because I to feel everyone should read it. But I wanted to say that I have pretty much said the same thing as you did in your post. I will read ANYTHING as long as it is well written. Different Authors have asked on FB “would you read a book about this or that” and I always say yes. If the author has written an amazing book, then I will go just about anywhere they take me. I love to read different genre of romance. I would dream of limiting myself, ever. I tell people how many great books I would have missed out on if I only stuck with a certain kind of book. One that comes to mind is “Always” by Kindle Alexander. It’s a M/M romance and that book will stay with me forever. Take some chances people and you will be amazed with some of the great book you will read. I loved your post!
amazing review! I can’t wait to read this book!
I’m sold. On wine, and the book.
I absolutely loved the Law Of Moses and Amy’s other books. You are correct; she writes beautifully and gives a message behind her books. Love them.
Tarryn, I’m enamored by your linguistic prowess and your ability to make everything you write so inviting….I want to read Law of Moses because I adore your books and trust your opinion implicitly. So pass me a Coke and bring it on!
Tarryn–thank-you for being so honest with your words. Although I am very picky about what I read, without social media I would never had discovered indie writers. I’d say that approximately 90% of what I read now is indie.
I myself drink cheap wine and I’ve never been able to move up to a more sophisticated taste.
I finished Mud Vein just last week and I have to say I could not wait until I had the time to read! So thank-you again!
Deborah
Wow. Now I really must book.
The Law of Moses was one of my favorite books last year along with Archer’s voice and Ugly love. Beautiful written, just perfect. Highly recommended.
The Law of Moses was a beautiful story! Not the typical genre that I normally indulge in. Thanks for the chance to win a signed copy ♡
I love Amy Harmon’s books. As a stay at home Mom, I don’t have the time or the money to invest in trilogies plus. I want to read and live a story and savor it and not worry about when the next book will come out and will I remember it by the time book two comes around. My time to read is priceless and when I can forget the small things in life and become immersed in a story that is the best feeling! I have yet to read “Law of Moses” but have been waiting for it to go on sale:) Writing this with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon in one hand! Cheers!
I loved this! My friend and I were just talking about this less than a week ago. It gets to a point where you want something that challenges your mind, thoughts and beliefs! And I have found more and more of these books! I love flawed characters! Real characters! Super rich challenges. That make me feel like I need to be a better human being!
Let’s start with the wine. I never really got passed the sweet stuff either. I don’t know why but if you give a glass of the sophisticated stuff more than likely I will take a sip and the rest will still be in the glass when I leave. It’s just the way it is and I am not going to change it. As for The Law of Moses I haven’t read it yet, but it will definitely be added to my TBR because, what can I say, I love new books. I read all genres. I have my own religious opinions ( I think we all do one way or another) but I never let that effect my opinion when it comes to my reading material. Thank you for an awesome blog post and the opportunity to win a book that obviously impacted you, and many others as well.
Love Amy’s writing and would love a signed copy of the law of Moses!
BRAVO! Well said! I 1000% agree on your review. My reader’s heart NEEDS a follow up to The Law of Moses! It was excellent and I would be so very thrilled to win a signed copy.
I was feeling down on myself for a bad review I got today because the reader didn’t identify with my character. My author friend told me that I was a “fined aged red with hints of cherry.” Now I don’t drink wine, but I think that was a compliment…and after reading this post…I want to read Law of Moses. It’s on y TBR, but I just haven’t bought it yet. I’d love to have an autographed copy.
This book is still on my TBR! That would be awesome to have so I can read it!
Well hell Tarryn. No I definitely have to read this! I completely trust your judgement and a great review! Very refreshing!
I read you because of Colleen Hoover…I’ve never read Amy but I guess now I will, because of you. Thanks. I’ll be back to bitch if I hate it (not really, I’ll just silently brood). And take good care of your shoes just in case…
I love this book. I would love a signed copy <3
I fell in love with Amy and her writing after I read Making Faces. I didn’t think she’d be able to top that in my opinion, but The Law of Moses blew me away. I look forward to reading more from her.
I waaant! Thank you so much for the chance Ms. Tarryn Fisher. 🙂 Katrina.usana@gmail.com
I’m always on the hunt for a story that is as much about the writing technique as the story, because I also feel like it inspires me as an indie writer to get better at it. There’s nothing like reading a well-executed sentence that makes you stop in your tracks and reread it. Thank you for the recommendation. I look forward to this one. And thanks for the opportunity to score a signed copy!
Loved reading this review! I would love to read this!
Threebrowns@hotmail.com
Amy is a great writer. I can’t wait to read all of her stories.
I love great writting! I would love to read law of moses.
I fell in love with you and your words…AGAIN! Too bad I can’t be that Scottish man you would like to meet… One day we will meet and you will… Like it and sign my books that were skillfully crafted by you!
I love your willingness to take ownership in your own she it comings and to step outside of the box. Though non filtered I truly believe we as humans need more “brass tacks” if you will. Something that causes us as people to recognize the power of honesty and opinions. That said I would love the chance to read a book that sparked your unfiltered review and seemingly cracked your soul a bit.
OMG. Love this post! I couldn’t agree more, and The Law of Moses was an amazing book!!
Wow, not only can you write a great book but you blog beautifully as well. I could never put my thoughts into words as eloquently as you do. I wholeheartedly agree with this post. Not just with the amazing and endearing story that was The law of Moses but with reading a book beautiful beyond it’s words and exploring the vast amounts of beauties out there. Great review, I’d love to own this book in paperback copy. vanep013@hotmail.com
Im a bookworm! Would love to read something new. Pick me! ☺️☺️
What a beautiful review! Will definitely be reading this now.
Amazing review! I am adding this book to my list and can’t wait to read it!!! Thank you!
Such a beautifully honest review that was so freaking refreshing. Thank you and I could agree with you more about. Indie authors racing to publish(which has contributed to my reading slump). I felt like I was the only one feeling this way and it feels so good someone else agrees. I thought it was all me. So thank you again for your honest opinion.
Thank you for such an honest review. Absolutely beautiful story.
Thaw was a superbly written review and I agree to all of it! I’ve read Law of Moses and loved it! Amy Harmon is a fantastic writer.
What a great review, Tarryn! Even this gets me thinking. The Law of Moses is on my February TBR as I plan to talk Moses with Amy in Austin…so I need to be knowledgeable. I’m an electic reader…I don’t discriminate and I encourage this with my reader friends as well. Thank you again for your words.
What a great review!! I have not read the book yet but definitely will be!! I’m always looking for something different to read 🙂
You sold me! Can’t wait to read it!
It was a pleasure meeting you and Amy Saturday. I read Making Faces and loved it. People are always anxious to point out the bad in others, but it’s amazing when someone does good and is recognized for it. Good for you to step out and say this amazing woman author wrote an amazing story…and you need to know about it. Can’t wait to read it 🙂
I’ve only heard good things about this book! Hearing such praise from one of my favourite authors bumped it up on my TBR list!
Thank you for the chance!!
ajtse@hotmail.com
This is amazing! I love this book so much!
I agree with everything you said. Plus, I work at a Winery, so I get you on the wine too! We are like the same here, Tarryn. I get it. Amy Harmon is a brilliant mind. A brilliant talent. And a brilliant writer. I agree.
The Law of Moses was a book that I was immediately drawn into. So of course I harassed my friends relentlessly until they agreed to read it so we could be in awe of such perfect writing together… Even the friends I didn’t think would really be into the storyline (the country aspect and the fact that it’s not fifty shades dirty) loved it. Couldn’t put it down, read it in the bathroom at work while pretending to take a shit loved it. Months later I am still shamelessly pimping out this book, along with LMWL. I love reading about characters that I want to dislike, characters that break the mold and are perfectly FLAWED. Thank you, Tarryn & Mia, for bringing these characters to life and for being two of the few authors that really inspire me to try to become a better writer (and reader) and think outside of the books.
Wow. I’m special. I just had a Eureka moment and realized I wrote Mia, as in Mia Sheridan. Just finished reading Kyland, it was on my brain yesterday.
Bravo! I have to say I am one of those “I like what I like” people. However, you have sold me on this book. I haven’t read anything by Amy Harmon yet (I know, I am now). I am confused as to why your mom thought you would lose readers over this post? I love honesty and I’m pretty sure you “nailed it”. Thank you!
I’ve never read a book written by you. In fact, every single one that’s been recommended to me has scared me, even though I currently have one sitting and waiting to be read and hasnt even been placed into a TBR folder yet. You aren’t the only author to scare me but you’re one who is recommended often and I often say the same thing.
After reading your review of The Law of Moses, I’ll be putting on my big girl panties and reading that book of yours. And then I’ll be buying The Law of Moses. Because what you did more than convince me that I need to read a book by Amy Harmon is that I need to read your writing. I need to take a chance and try “a sip of a different wine”. Maybe I’m a book snob. I’m probably not. I didn’t read Bright Side for a long, long time, either because I was afraid to ugly cry. Once I read it, I’ve now pimped that book to every person I know.
So thank you. Thank you for reminding me what reading is all about. It’s not about genres. Or about pigeonholing yourself into one. It’s about finding things that make you happy and doing that.
Amy Harmon is an amazing writer. I love evey one of her books. Thank you so much for the chance. It’s wonderful to see indie writers supporting one another instead of tearing each other down.
That’s what I love about my favorite writers they speak their minds and they’re not afraid to! I honestly would read anything you and Colleen Hoover remommend, I trust your jugdment. Forgive me if this text is bad written but I don’t even speak english 😉
P.S. You are on my top list of writers!
You sure didn’t lose this reader! I am guilty of not stepping outside of my norm when buying/reading books very often. I have not read this book yet but you can bet your ass I’m going to now. thank you for the eye opener.
I would LOVE to read this book. Help me develop my pallet!
Love this review. I’ve been dying to read this!
Laws of Moses sounds so good! Can’t wait to read it!
This book sounds wonderful! Would love to get a copy to read!
I truly enjoyed reading The Law of Moses. My emotions were raw, I cried, laughed and felt joy.
I agree with your review of this book. Much as I would like to enjoy a glass of wine I am allergic to alcohol so no fun for me
Love this. The Law of Moses is on my wish list and how you described Amy Harmon’s writing style makes me want to read it even more now.
My friend told me about this book last week. She is the biggest bookworm I know! I would really like to read it. Especially after this post. I loved your books…they made me want to beat you up with them but that is a whole other story! I loved the writing, the story, and the way those books brought out emotions I didn’t know even existed. The emoting rollacoster was awesome because I wasn’t sure if I could go on but I knew I had to know the end! I love when life is moving on and your reading a book and have no clue what is going on in that moment! You are in your own little book world and for that moment it’s all you need or care about! That why I love to read. But I can’t stand a book that is rushed through and the small details that matter are left unknown. I hate too many sec scenes, I hate unrealistic stories. It’s hard for me to read that stuff and not roll my eyes!!! I’m that person! Lol
I like free speech people who says what they really think and don’t let others influence their decisions. I’m the same way! I stopped trying cmake everyone happy! I’m not mean about it or rude, but if I don’t like something I say it, if I think something is gross I don’t eat it, if I think a book stinks I skip to the end. What u see is what u get…that is why I like your books! I feel you write that way!
I am in school and money is tight, so to get a copy of this book would make my day! Not that that is a reason to get free stuff, I just pay for school and work part-time. I would pay it forward because good books should never be kept a secret!!!! Thanks
I love everything about this post and loved this book! You definitely have a way with words. Please never stop writing!!
Pinot Noir is my favorite wine! Maybe that’s why I loved The Law of Moses. Great review!
I love Amy Harmon’s writing style with all my heart, although I haven’t read The Law of Moses yet. I’ve read Making Faces and A Different Ie, abd they were well-written, well though of, and just basically perfect! Here in the Philippines, most people don’t know that Amy Harmon exists, and I really, really hope that that would change soon!
Thank you for your wit and class. You make me want to read. 🙂 ♡
I loved The Law of Moses. And I totally agree with this post. I also have a bottle of that Jam Jar that apparently I need to open 🙂
Thank you for your wit and class. you make me want to read. I look forward to this book.
Hi Tarryn,
I just finished The Law of Moses.
I bought it when it was released, read a couple of reviews, and because of that I waited until I was ready to read it. Yes, that’s right, I needed to be “ready” to read it because of the aspect of the storyline, I was afraid I wouldn’t like it. And I love Amy Harmon, so I was scared. But I knew she wouldn’t disappoint (I was right again) so I waited.
Also I hadn’t read Running Barefoot, because I knew that book wouldn’t live my panties wet, so I wasn’t in the mood to read it. But 2 days ago, after reading a couple of outstanding books, followed by big book hangovers, and many many 1 and 2 star reads in between, I was ready for different, just like you wrote in this review. I was ready for outstanding. And both books by Amy Harmon were outstanding.
I’ve loved every single book she wrote, since I read A different blue 3 years ago. When she releases a book, I automatically 1-click them. Even if the story might contain certain things I may or not like. She is a brilliantly talented writer and even knowing I might not like what’s in the book, she makes me like them.
(Kind of like you)
So ya Tarryn, I totally get you 😉
Great review! I would love to read Law of Moses. Thank you for the chance!
I honestly don’t know why anyone would be passed off at this blog post…but I’m a little dense sometimes. 🙂 This was a brilliantly written review! Also, thanks for the giveaway.
Crap! Of course I meant “pissed off”, stupid autocorrect…
I haven’t read this book yet, but it sounds like a good read. Thank you for the giveaway.
If you need my email address, it is robmwmj at gmail dot com
Amy Harmon is a genius. She is a wonderful writer and the most skilled at her craft. I’m in awe every time I pick up one of her book.
Fabulous review Tarryn! Absolutely loved The Law of Moses! I need a signed copy for my bookshelf!
soo adding this to my tbr now list!
I haven’t read this one yet, but I hope to soon! It sounds wonderful!!
I have been literally DYING to read this dang book!!!!!!! I have heard nothing but wonderful things about this book and its author. Your review was funny and tasteful, well done, girl!!!!!
s504900@mail.nwmissouri.edu
I would love to read this book…. Pick me. While I have your attention, I have to just say that I love/hate your writing. Ok, so I mostly love it, but I want to reach out and stab most of your characters. Which I guess makes you some sort of genius. I believe the government could use you as a torture device of some sort. Can’t wait for your next book.
This book was great, loved it. I love Amy Harmon. I totally love your review too. It’s good to broaden your horizon sometimes. I myself, read all kinds of books.
I’ve been in this mentality as of late. I recently belonged to an online bookclub, and had been in it for about 2 years. I met amazing people and then some not so much. Anyways, the taste of the bookclub was no longer what I wanted to read. Branching out and reading out of the norm books is amazing! Amy Harmon is a genius, I couldn’t think of a more beautiful book than The Laws of Moses. You’re description of it is perfect. It would be cool to drink cheap wine with you one day, wines on me.
Your*
Great post. Not a writer, but loved King’s On Writing because it gave a peek behind the curtain of his writing process.
Ahhh…so true!! Every word of it! That is the joy in reading, finding new things you like, learning about something new, expanding your mind. I have different genres that I tend to choose from and I do this simply because it bores me to stick to one type of book for to long. It keeps things interesting and like you said, it allows me to broaden my mind. Thanks for the chance to win this wonderfully written book!! You are awesome!! 🙂
I have encountered The Law of Moses a couple of times but didn’t have the strong urge to pick it up and read it yet but after reading this review, Damn, I might as well run to the nearest book store (or Amazon for convenience) and get this baby!
(Email: rymahurt@gmail.com)
I always thought there was something wrong with me, like my taste buds are broken or something because I just can’t like a strong, oaky red wine. So thanks for making that part of me feel normal! I know though, that there is nothing wrong with my taste in writing. Not when I read reviews like this. I have favourite authors and as time goes on and the more books I read, the snobbier I feel. “Oh, her characters aren’t as funny as Colleens.” “That story was… nice?” I think a good book is a combination of everything, few can do it, thank goodness you, Colleen, Kim, Beth and most definitely Amy have got it right!
Tarryn,
Your provacative review has successfully nudged me to move my copy of “The Book of Moses” to the very top of my TO BE READ stack. I think that sums up my reaction to your post, yes?
I haven’t read this, and honestly I am scared to.. sometimes stepping out of your comfort level of reading is hard.. but I am willing to give it a go. So thank you for reminding us to take a chance on something new. I am bumping this book up on my tbr list 🙂
The Law of Moses is one of the best stories I’ve read. Loved it!
Well after that post….. I believe that I must read this and try me some of this Jam Jar sweet goodness you speak of! Hmmmmm and this also made me love you even more! I appreciate the sassy, feisty, opinionated people out there who aren’t afraid to make waves! kudos! Also I’m a product of the $6 bottle of wine club***guilty
Amy Harmon is an author that I prefer NOT to know the synopsis of newest release before I purchase. After Blue and Making Faces (a favorite) I just buy.
The Law of Moses was a perfect surprise I would be honored to own a signed copy.
Thank you for highlighting her work to all your followers! Everyone should savor the flavor of an Amy Harmon original!!
I absolutely loved The Law of Moses. It was my first book of Amy’s and I loved it so much I immediately pulled up the rest of her books and read them as well. She truly writes some spectacular stories. Moses really resonated with me from the very first sentence. Spectacular story.
This was really beautiful. There are always people out there who judge others because of what they read, why, I don’t know. Shouldn’t we all be happy there are people still enjoying the art of reading? But you hit the mark on going outside the norm and experiencing other stories. I’ve read so many good things about this book, and this post just makes me want to get it even sooner! Great words Tarryn!!
Haven`t read it yet, but it`s on my TBR pile. I`m looking forward to reading it 🙂
I’ve never listen about this book. It looks interesting and worth reading. I would love to read it, specially if you recommend it (:

I’ve had an interesting journey with Ms Harmon. When everyone fell all over themselves about Making Faces, I jumped in. I finished the last page feeling confused. I wasn’t sure why everyone was talking about the romance of the story when she had created one of my favorite characters ever: Bailey. I don’t recall ever weeping like that over a fictional character, but he was crafted so beautifully and I was devastated by his story in the most soul obliterating way.
Then Infinity + One came out, and I didn’t hesitate. At then end, I remembered a review about Making Faces that stated Harmon’s work was Christian fiction in disguise. I disagreed and thought she had written about a character with Christian views. Very different. But after Infinity, I felt like a sweet little old lady had promised to take me for ice cream, but stopped at bible study instead. And while I pouted over the lack of hot fudge in the form of beautiful language and gut twisting characters, she silently judged my dark lipstick and love of metal music.
So when Moses came out, I gave my kindle the side eye and thought, “I see what you did there, Ms Harmon. This time it’s out in the open. I can respect that.” And I moved Moses into my “thanks, but no thanks” pile. I ignored all the glowing reviews and group discussions and happily curled up with Mr Gaiman and Ms Austen instead.
Now I read carefully constructed words from a writer who I not only admire, but envy for her skills telling me about the incredible craftsmanship of a book I refused.
You just made me move Moses back into the “I should probably read that” pile. Maybe one day I’ll crave some more ice cream.
Amy Harmon, since her first novel that many don’t notice, has stolen my soul! She is hands down, and forever will be, on my top 5 favorite authors of all time list.
loved the review – have this on my to read list – looks like I need to move it up!!!
You are an amazing author and your craft is finely tuned and so frustratingly real! I can’t stop reading and have read all your books – I like happy endings I have too much real in my life – but you’re impossible to resist!
The Law of Moses. When I read the synopsis, I said to myself,I need to read it, so intriguing. Even though I’m having a hard time understanding the english language so, I recommended this to my “someone special” and we read it together(the first novel that we read together, so the book is special to me too), he helped me to understand the book better. And I’m happy to know that a bestselling author like “The Law of Moses” too, it’s like wow, I didnt know I have a good a taste on books. 😀 My five Greats today( Tarry Fisher Blog, My first ever comment on a blog, My Braveness to comment here, New books to read(Tarryn’s book) and Lastly “The Law of Moses) ❤
I absolutely looove this book! Amy Harmon is a genius. You have given it an amazing review!
Tarryn, I like the way you think. I follow you on social media, but this post made me see a whole different side of you. I couldn’t agree with you more. Sometimes I see books that many people are reading, so I try it out, and I just can’t. When I came across this book, I immediately fell hard. It was beautifully written. I connected with the characters and story, not because HOT DAMN, the guy in the story is so effin sexy and can make the heroine come every 5 seconds (not that there isn’t anything wrong with sexy men), but because just a simple look, touch, painting, or 5 greats had me hooked. I’ll continue to expand my wine taste. Dude, you’re awesome, and no, tell your mom you will continue to buy shoes because it’s words like these that make you gain readers rather than lose.
Hi Tarryn I absolutely agree with you about developing a taste for good writing and true few writers like cooleen Hoover totally nailed it. I would love to read Amy Harmon’s book and after I read your article would totally love to attend her writing class
I read this book because of Colleen Hoover, I was really hesitant at first cause I knew I was going to cry. But I went through with it and cried a river. I loved Mosses and I visualized his art, and understood his impulses… And I saw this post off facebook lol thank you for sharing your epic mind with us!
Oh and here’s my email marlin.paulino@yahoo.com
Great book.great review.buy better wine!
Perfect review!!!
Amy Harmon is the type of writer that you one click her books without a second thought. Making Faces is my all time favorite book of hers but Law of Moses isn’t too far behind. This book made me laugh, cry, gasp, and wail. She is my go to writer when I need a good read (even if I’ve already read it) Amazing, writing at its best!!!
I have had this book on my to read list since it released but it will be the next book I read now. Thanks for your thoughts and recommendation. If you liked it and I LOVE your stuff, I have a good feeling I will need to read it and QUICK!
such a beautiful book!!!
yes. All of it… Yes!! Thank you for, once again, making me laugh out loud
What a great review! Your personality and humor shines right through every word and I agree with most of it. As much as I love happy endings, I love raw and realistic stories even more. This was undoubtedly one of them. The Law of Moses was definitely a worth while read.
Loved Law of Moses.
It was unique <3 I love Amy Harmon! She's amazing.
Hope I can win one copy 😀
First of all, if I had never heard of this book before and happened to stumble upon your review, there is no doubt in my mind that I would have dropped whatever I was doing to go hunt for it.
I read The Law of Moses just around New Years and consequently ended up becoming invisible to my family because I was so immersed in this phenomenally well written book. In fact, after I finished reading it, I couldn’t speak to anyone because I was still dissecting the story and characters piece by piece in my head. The way you have worded the importance of building a character and giving he or she a defining personality is brilliant. I can’t think of anyone who could have said it better.
There are only a select few authors whom I trust wholeheartedly with my sanity and will therefore read any book they release (you are definitely one of them) and I think it’s safe to say that Amy Harmon has made it onto my list as well.
Both Moses and Georgia (and even little Eli) were so beautifully crafted that they had me thinking about the tiny most simplistic details that were carefully woven into the story line.
Basically, I’m obsessed with this book and your review of it because lets face it, you tell the truth.
I really loved this whole post. And your friend is absolutely right. We all have a our preferences. It’s sometimes scary to step outside of our norm. It’s human nature to stick to what we know. I’ve found myself stepping outside the box and loving a story I didn’t even think of before. I love that. I love being shocked by a story, I didn’t think I’d enjoy. Then I think, ‘Fuck Jenn..why did you wait so long?”
Law of Moses is on my ‘to read list’, so thank you for the chance to win a copy!
The Law of Moses was brilliant as are Amy Harmon’s other books. Being in college I’m surrounded by judgmental and close minded people. After reading this book and your post further proves we need to be more open-minded about things or we’re going to miss out on what living is really about.
“Because I’d rather be hated for having an opinion than overlooked for not having one.”
Then I would rather be overlooked because people are too judgmental and I cannot deal with it.
Wow amazing review for an amazing book. Would love to win a signed copy x
I’d love to read anything you recommend! I may even try some Jam Jar…
This has been one of the best book reviews I have ever read. I love how you put it all in perspective. I’m going to take a sip of a different wine and read Angela’s Ashes.
Your mother must be so proud of the person you’ve become. I myself am in awe of your talent and take on life <3
Thank you Tarryn Fisher! Thank you for suggesting I try some new wine (oh, and for suggesting I read outside my comfort genre). Sounds like a book I could easily get lost in…with some Jam Jar of course!
Hanadi.nasser@gmail.com
Another book on my to read list! Thank you for the recommendation! Never never was awesome by the way!!
Loved this review! I’m so excited to read this!
Awesome review! I can’t wait to read it. 🙂

I sooo love your review… Amy Harmon is one of my favorite authors, I love her books and writing style. I’ve been wishing and dying to have a copy of Law of Moses! Thank you for the chance in winning this book
Here’s my email : jayzeljavier60@yahoo.com
So excited to read Law of Moses.
I absolutely loved the Law of Moses. Would be ecstatic to win a paperback of it. Thanks for the chance. Great review. Can’t wait to read Marrow. 🙂
So excited to meet you this September here in the Philippines!:)

I read this book following a post from Colleen Hoover on FB last year and I was truly blown away, not my usual reading genre but i can honestly say it was one of my favourite reads of 2014
Thank you, Tarryn for your wonderfully worded insights, and your unflagging support of a fellow author. I think both of you write with stunning poetry of voice and meaningful impact. I would greatly treasure one of these copies if I were to win.
sounds fantastic. Would love a chance to win. Thank you
Wow, Tarryn! You do have a way with words! I am not only adding The Law of Moses on my TBR list, but I am anxious to start reading! Can I get my copy soon? You are a genious!
I love Amy Harmon’s books, her penmanship is first class and she always writes an amazing story. Well said Tarryn x
I soooo love Amy Harmon’s books – I read each one of the
… and this one landed automatically on the reading list.
Reading what you wrote I am absolutely positive I will love it
I also love your work and your work together with Colleen Hoover…
Normally seeing “a new Book is out” form one of you makes my week already before even checking the plot …
What a great review! I always try to expand my literary horizon and read books that I normally wouldn’t .. and I love it when I do and stumble across a gem that makes me look at myself, writing and reading in a completely new way. I just love that experience and those feelings that come with it. So, what I’m trying to say is that I would love to read this book and hopefully experience that feeling again.
My email: zeniaradoor@hotmail.com
So I think your mom might be wrong about your followers. You basically said, what I am thinking each time I read a book. I review books on my blog (yes I am actually allowed to do so by the publishing houses o.O Weirdos shouldn’t give me books) and I have learned a great deal about writing just through reading books.
I used to buy books by cover. Which still influences me, but I also read the back and skim the first pages. Well… The book I just finished last night has a very nice cover, a convincing few words on the back and lots of big time Magazines and writeres pushing it. Needless to say… I didnt like it. Why? The writing was okay but soooo boring. I think it’s, like you said, with wine. Maybe the book was “too high up on the palate” and I just haven’t tasted anything like it but I do think it was below my avarage reading palete. My wine drinking palate is like yours… Let the sweet stuff come my way 😉
And now… I will keep on reading older entries. Maybe that will get that bad book taste out of my head ôo
Take care
Anna

It was one of my favourite books of 2014. I’m not eloquent enough to describe how this story made me feel, but I think you just did. Thank you, truly.
Beautifully written. I won’t pretend to be a critical reader when knows everything about writing, but I completely agree with what you’re saying. I mean good writing is the reason I can still read romance after romance after romance book. They are each ultimately the same story over and over, but the writing of the book I’d what makes it a great book or just sub par.
Loved this review
Yeah well… i dont know much about books and I´m mexican and I can’t say all the things i would like in english but what I CAN say is that the way you write is so amazing and special and you make us see the things in a different way. I may not win the book but all i ask is to please try to sell it in México. Is very difficult to find your books here.
Thank you for everything.
With Love Diana xoxo
I want to experience whatever you have experienced while reading The Law of Moses so pleaseee pick me 😀
hi, it sounds so interesting.. i wanted to read it.. i am so sorry for not reading it yet… can’t wait to read it and take you for the chance… <3
The color, the boldness, shot harshly through me . *****
millstwins@yahoo.com
I especially love this part, “Though what I have found about Amy’s belief system causes me to respect her more as both a human and a writer because she believes in something other than tattooed biceps and a long, experienced dick.” I loved Moses and Georgia’s story. And little Eli was irresistible with his darn cute cape!
Nobody could have written such a review!!!!!!Well said to you! Well done to Amy Harmon!
I love you!And today, I love you more!
Brilliant post! So often as romance readers we catch a lot of flack for what we read, why add to it? I love your approach about going outside the box and it’s true. Sometimes cleaning your palette makes the return to your favorite genre and/or wine so much better. I’m a huge romance reader but I’ve recently tried going outside the box, my suggestion You by Caroline Kepnes. SO CREEPY.
PS. I started off with boxed wine and I’m slowly learning the finer points of wine but I still like to go back and pick up that sutter home.
Manur83@icloud.com
The Law of Moses was most definitely one of my top reads of 2014 and one of my all time favorite books. I loved your comments on it, Tarryn. “If you’re looking for a quick thrill, wet panties, or mindless entertainment, you won’t like the subtle hues and expensive flavors in The Law of Moses.”
If I could paste the whole last paragraph of your post, I would. Oh what the hell, I have to highlight this, “Whatever genre you read, read the most well written of its kind (no genre judgement from me) and every so often read outside of that genre. At the very least you can say “I drank that once” and feel a little bit more experienced.”
Thanks for the chance of winning a signed copy of such a beautiful story (and how gorgeous is that cover?). I am on my way to pick up Stephen King’s ‘On Writing’. Expanding…drinking from the cup…all that jazz. I adore you, Tarryn!
Love the review! The Law Of Moses is top-listed in my tbr-list and this makes me even more excited to read it. By the way, I’m a horrible wine drinker. I keep trying the stuff but I just don’t understand how people can drink it and honestly love it. I only drink the super sweet fruity stuff where you have to search for the alcohol. – I’m a horrible alcohol drinker in general really. I get tired after two sips and just want to go to bed…
Thanks for the giveaway!
a.d.kruijf@gmail.com
I really enjoyed your comments about this book and the writer. I think you are a fantastic writer and I will read The Law of Moses. I’m a wine drinker too. Started out with Riunite. Its cheap and did the trick back in my twenties. Now I drink Cabernet. My favorite is Dave Matthews Band Dreaming Tree. Keep writing, Jenn
I’m with you, I don’t have the taste buds/palate to drink the expensive wine, I’m more of a fruity sweet wine drinker also. Lol I have never read the book you gave the review on, but now I do. It sounds amazing!!
I love your review!! The Law of Moses is one of my all time favorite. Amy Harmon can do no wrong! I would love a copy of her book 🙂
Although I have not read The Law of Moses yet, all that you said about it reminds me of the way I felt when I read your Mud Vein and Kim Holden’s Bright Side. I would love to try The Law of Moses since you feel so strongly about it.
I have been going back and forth about reading The Law of Moses. I have started reading some of the posts and realize that everything is positive. Thank you for your recommendation. I believe I am ready for it now.
Great review! I love reviews that intertwines a reader’s life to the story. Thank you for your review. Although I don’t have the Law of Moses yet, it is on my TBR list. Hope I win a copy. Now off to read Amy Harmon’s Running Barefoot.
I love this post. I haven’t read any of your books but they’re all over my TBR. They just moved up the list asking with The Law of Moses. I think a lot of people read the lower-quality writing and never venture away from it, much like you said. I was almost one of those people. Some less-than-stellar-but-very-popular books ignited my passion. But then I left my comfort zone and ended up in book Eden. I still love my quick easy reads but I do greatly appreciate those books with refined writing.
Great post!
I’m currently reading Infinity + one, honestly this is my first Amy Harmon read. I have seen lots of reviews about her books and from what I see from those reviews, i know she’s indeed a very talented author.
now that I read your review about The Law of Moses, it makes me want to read it even more! I’ve added that book in my TBR list even before it’s released but haven’t had a chance to read it hehe.
i usually always stuck in one genre, but after reading this post, i think i want to try another genre i’ve never read before. your blog post above really inspiring me. thank you 🙂
I will be buying this book immediately. I love everything you said. I’m a former Red Cat drinker who has progressed to Cabernet Sauvignon and I’m always looking for that next jolt to my taste buds. Thank you for being my reading sommelier this morning!
Amy is my favorite writer. I love the way she tells a story- the emotions, the conflicts, everything. It’s perfect. I’m glad a lot of people appreciates her work the way I do. Thank you and stay awesome, Ms. Tarryn!

Wow, what a well thought out post, I live it. I don’t believe a true fan would no longer be a fan after reading this. Your recommendation has been noted and The Law of Moses is going on my TBR list immediately. Thank you. And thank you for the opportunity to win a copy.
Oh and by the way, I have not moved up that wine social ladder either!
I would LOVE to have a copy of this! I haven’t read it yet!! Thanks for the chance!!
I haven’t read this book and honestly hadn’t even heard about it but I am heading to Amazon as soon as I hit send on this post. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I completely agree with you on every point. Like with my music (I listen to everything) I also love to read all genres (except horror, I’m a
I’m a writer as well as a reader, too, which can be a challenge because you read as a writer. I read forty-five books or so last year and could find only a few gems (Mud Vein being one of them). This year I’ve torn through eleven books in January alone in order to rejuvenate my own writing because I’m woefully behind in finishing my next book. The Law Of Moses was a standout for me. This is what I had to say on Goodreads about it…
Five Greats: Amy Harmon’s writing, Amy Harmon’s amazing ability to tell a story, the uniqueness of this story, Moses, and Georgia. LOVED it!!! This is a love story that should be experienced and one that will stay with you. The Law Of Moses is intricately woven and truly lyrical. It reads like a sheet of the finest music where the song itself seemingly jumps off the page needing to be played. LOVED it!!! I said that already. I’ll say it again. I LOVED it.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1103613003?book_show_action=false
Amy Harmon’s writing is stellar. The character build in this story line grips you and doesn’t let you go. A masterpiece. We all strive to write those. The Law Of Moses was one of those.
I haven’t read it yet but I would love to win and read it. 🙂
Thank you so much for your honest review. I havent read the book yet, but will definitely bump it up my TBR list!
This book has been highly recommended by my favorite book group and has been on the top of my to be read pile for a while now. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about this book so I am excited to check it out for myself.
This is an amazing review of an amazing story!! I am still in my book haze from Law of Moses and I finished it a few days after the release!
You are absolutely correct in knowledge is power however; it seems people continue want to stay in the dark and drag other along for the ride. Open up eyes and look around you. I truly believe in being a catalyst for change and if I cannot do my part in that, then what good am I? Many look for the quick fix,it takes hard work and dedication to be successful. I applaud you for speaking your mind and not being afraid to give others something to think about. BRAVO!!!!
And this ladies and gentlemen is why you make the big bucks… Normally I skim through reviews cause they go on and on I don’t find I get much from them. Your review however (maybe it’s cause I was watching an episode of the flash and it made me tear up) kept me reading and brought a tears to my eyes. I have read the Law of Moses and I can’t begin to describe how amazing I thought it was, I soon after read making faces. Amy Harmon is a ridiculously talented author and you couldn’t have put it better makes such real stories with so much heart and depth that you can’t possibly imagine. I have never read anything of yours but with that being said if it’s anything like this review you just wrote up I will be. It’s nice to see authors supporting other authors!
I haven’t read this yet. Thank you for the chance.
I would love a signed book. Thank you for this chance.
LOVE this! Your words are awesome… And I admit, you have made me feel bad about my own thoughts on the book… Although I really liked it, because the writing was so profound, I kind of disliked it at the same time. Maybe that is because I am more used to fast-paced books. This one wasn’t, at least not for me. Like I said, I liked this book, but I didn’t love it in the way many others have. But you will have that from time to time. Some books I read and LOVE, others have a distaste for them. To each his/her own. This is the BEST review, EVER! I give it 5-stars!!!!
Beautifully said. I’ve read all of Amy Harmon’s book and they are amazing.
I have not yet read Law Of Moses, but it’s on my TBR (and now it’s moved up several spots on said TBR!).
I absolutely love this post. I just had a conversation with a friend this morning about how we love switching up our reading so that things don’t get old and we get to experience something new. It is easy to become complacent and then judge others by our complacency. It’s just as easy to hide behind the veneer of social media and cast those judgey stones. Thank you, for sharing your thoughts through this enlightening post. (I have read TLOM and loved it. It was on my best list of 2014.)
I’ve been an Indie reader for almost 3 years and I’m soo grateful for IA because of CJ Roberts I took a chance on something I wouldn’t have in the past. And thank the book Goddeses that I did because the Dark Duet series opened my eyes and because of it I absolutely love dark books. Sometimes you have to step outside your norm how do you grow as a reader and person if you never try anything new? The Law of Moses is a phenomenal experience that I think everyone should try because characters like Georgia and Moses are very rare.
I always get stares when I go for cheap wine. I think they believe I know nothing about wine, but I just prefer my cheap wine! Your review of Law of Moses was spot on. I, too, put writing technique and characters first. A good story plot is nothing without the two.
I just LOVE the way you put this out into the world. I touch as many genres as I can just for the fun of having something different every time I open a book.
As I say: Every book deserves to be read at least once!
Wow, that is beautifully put Tarryn! I am on board with the concept that writing comes first, I have read a lot of books that in the right hands could have been great stories. Instead I struggled through or on a couple occasions didn’t finish.
I would love the chance to read your work.
I haven’t read this book yet. But Amy Harmon is amazing! The first book of hers that I read was Making Faces. After that she became a “must read all her books!” Author.
On your opinion… No hating at all! We all have our opinions. I’ve been in situations in which I will read a book that has really good ratings but I just don’t feel emotional rollercoaster or I’m just not too much into it, I’ll try, but I’m just not feeling it. To be honest I’ll feel bad only when its from a favorite author. But I keep in mind that even if I love the author, that book was just not for me.
Love this post!❤
Have a fantastic day 🙂 aime_lopez@hotmail.com
I don’t have a way with words. I am not a wine drinker. But I love to read. I love reading the books you and Colleen Hoover recommend. Your review of The Law of Moses was spot on. It was an amazing read.
Oh my god! I love your review, Tarryn!! I haven’t read something yours yet, but after this incredible POV of the Law of Moses, I will definitely check your work! 🙂 I was planning to start with Never Never 😉 Anyway, I loved that book, so good luck for me 😀
I should be studying for my neuro psych test, but I had to stop everything and read this blog post/review. I really loved the overall message of your post: Experience lies at the end of your comfort zone (or in this case, your reading zone!) Thank you for this post, I sincerely enjoyed reading it!
I can’t get enough of your beautiful words. I’ve read this 3 times now. TLoM was beautiful, as was this. <3
This has been on my TBR list since it came out. I like fluffy reads interspersed with true literary masterpieces. I feel it keeps me sharp and from becoming too jaded (pretentious). I loved Making Faces and cannot wait to read this. Why have I waited, you ask. As much as I look forward to reading I often find as much of a thrill from the anticipation of a book. I both love and hate hype. While I feed off the frenetic energy of reviewers and their 5 stars sometimes few books actually live up to it. So I both like the assurance 5 star reviews give me but fear that the book itself may not live up to the buildup.
I just finished this book the other day. It was great! 🙂 nrsharkey@aol.com
Having just finished “Mud Vein” a few weeks ago, (which I loved, but broke my heart!), and having read and loved the “Love Me With Lies” series, I know that what you recommend is always going to be realistic and well-written. And often painful to read. Which means I would LOVE to get a copy of this book 🙂
Wow wow wow am I so excited to read this! We love you Tarryn!!!
Hey Tarryn! I am here. you did not lose me. hahaha
I read The Law of Moses two month ago. You are right. Amy Harmon has a great writing style.
All the Best,
Fernanda D. (your fan number 1 from Brazil)
That was a great post. You have a way with words yourself. I have read all of your books. While I haven’t read this book by Amy Harmon, you have convinced me to get it sooner rather than later. Thanks for this chance to win.
Thank you for your honesty and unique twist of words about this book. It’s been on my TBR list for awhile. Perhaps I’m afraid I’ll take a sip and get drunk off of Amy’s words. Time to sit back and enjoy some fine wine…I mean a good book ; )
***Crossing fingers – I’d like to win!***
P. S. I am a reader and words are my food. Feed me. Where is your next book?! I’m starved.
P. P. S. I’m no fool. I’ll read The of Moses soon.
Like you, I have stunted wine taste as well. My preference…Manischewitz Concord Grape. Like you, I often try other wines searching for something different, perhaps more “sophisticated” in the eyes of the wine snobs around me. I find my reading follows the same path. I often find other genres that I enjoy for a book or two and then I return to my tried and true…..
Tarryn, I love your writing and I have been hooked for some time now. Thank you!
The Law of Moses and Mudvein are my two FAVORITE reads of 2014 and that is no lie (totally NOT blowing smoke up your ass LOL) I ordered Mudvein from your site and just waiting on delivery ( I already have the Love Me With Lies series) and I would LOVE to add The Law of Moses to my signed book collection. Thanks for the opportunity 🙂
well said Tarryn I couldn’t agree more…Amy Harmon is a wonderful writer and a beautiful person inside and out!
As usual you blow me away with your writing. Genuine and original, I agree with with what you’re saying. It’s great to read a good honest review .
I totally agree with what u said.. Its story is unique and the male character, is not the typical that is so handsome with tats and big body.. Super nice story and u’ll learned lessons in life.. Nice review Tarryn!! Like it!! 🙂
I’ve heard a lot of great things about this book. I guess I need to join in and decide for myself! I’d love to have one of the copies, but let’s be honest, I’ll end up buying one soon anyhoo.
Beautifully said… You are wise beyond your years and I am so glad I have experienced your books & your passion!!! Xoxo
This post is awesome because it is honest and real. Authors that are honest and real earn my respect and make me want to read their books. I’m not all about that fake shit that some throw out there to make their name shine in lights.
I’m new to Amy Harmon but I’ve heard great things about her. I just bought Making Faces a couple days ago and can’t wait to read it. Now I’ll have to check out Law of Moses too! Great review!
PS – I’ve read On Writing by Stephen King. Excellent book.
I have heard wonderful things about her and she is on my tbr list. Thank you!
this is exactly what I tell my sister. We ten to read YA NA erotica, you know the kind. My sister will not read around, she knows what she likes and sticks with it. I on the other hand try and read around the genres and also try rand read books with low ratings. Another mans trash is another mans treasure and all that. I also can’t stop once I’ve started so if a book is awful I won’t stop reading it, I won’t read any sequels (usually) it may have but I can’t DNF books (it’s my ocd!). Again my sister will oy read books with high reviews but I keep trying to tell her that reading some crap will make the good books so much better – I said to her it was like having champagne and caviar evey day for breakfast – it’s not sustainable!
My theory is much like yours. I do think people (my sister included) would benefit from reading a little of genres that aren’t their first choice and I also think that reviews sometimes have to be read with a pinch of salt. Give it a try, you may not like it but you won’t have lost anything (other than a few hours) and you might well have learnt something. 🙂
This review by far is the best I’ve read on The law of Moses. Reading this book was a breath of fresh air. And you’re absolutely right, we need to read outside the same genre and we need to upgrade our reading level.
Love Amy Harmon! Been waiting to read this.
I’m wondering if yiu’ve had the chance to read Making Faces? That is my favorite out of all of Amy’s books, second would be Running Barefoot. She’s one of my favorite authors (just like you) and anything she writes is gold 🙂
I love the way you said this. I am guilty of sticking to what I know, or what I like. The problem is you don’t get a well rounded experience this way. When I got back into reading it was with Collen Hoover, and she is phenomenal, but my picks after reading her were softer, and safer. I had a girl from work recommend a darker book to me, which I bought but never intended to read. I had to read it one day, due to uploading issues on my Kindle. I had to drag my brain kicking and screaming through the first few chapters, but was pleasantly surprised to enjoy her perception of things. It made me see a whole new flip side of the situation! Now I try to add something new to my list of tbr list all the time. Just to add a new interesting twist to the long list of same old! Very well said Tarryn as always. Thanks for the chance to try a great author!
I LOVE Amy Harmon’s books! I would like everyone to read (try) them. I’m so glad you did Tarryn! Her writing astounds me & her characters & stories are intricately developed. You should read Making Faces next & prepare yourself for another well written book with characters you will fall in love with & a truely unique amazing story. Awesome review Tarryn! You are also gifted with words!
I have never read a more spot on review. This is exactly how i felt reading Ms Amy Harmon’s books and i most especially loved this part, “…what I have found about Amy’s belief system causes me to respect her more as both a human and a writer…” This is how I feel when I get to read books that make me think and feel and just stare off at a distance for a while. I wonder what beautiful human being is capable of conjuring such feelings through words. Thank you for your words beautiful women. 🙂
I watched the 10th commandments gazillion times…pick me :p (I’m kidding BTW)
Wow! Your page looks amazing! And thank you for the chance to win The Law of Moses.
Wow… you are a brilliant writer and a brilliant book reviewer. I have not had the pleasure of reading this book but I would love to read it. Whether I win a signed copy or not I will read it very soon! But winning a signed copy of this book would be amazing. Thanks for the chance Tarryn ♡
I havent read it yet, but I anxious to do it!!!
You inspire me. You’re so true with what you believ in and who you are. Truth is ugly and we all know fantasies are just that. Fantasies. You’re not losing any readers or compromising on buying more shoes, Tarryn. This post was too true and too good and I’m definitely tasting a little of something else but most of all i’m gonna read this book.
Thanks for the chance!!! Debra.diaz@yahoo.com
3 things:
1-Who really likes wine anyway?
2-I think you should let Colleen Hoover be a part of your #clothedcaption.
3-Thank you for writing an honest review. I don’t like when people sugarcoat for the sake of sugarcoating. It is a sticky subject for me. Now I have added this to my “to read” list.
Sincere thanks to my favorite “soul eater”.
My 5 greatest: the air that I breath, the smile of my child Ian, waking up next to my husband, my eyes that read this book, my beautiful dogs Taz and Bella!!!
That is the greatest review I have ever read. I’m currently still reading the book right now and I can tell you the author had my full attention from that prologue. I admire you for recognizing talent in another author and that’s why I’m your greatest fan. I would love a signed copy of the book very much.
I myself am I cheap book reading scum bag who enjoys tattooed man-whores, very much so. But I also believe in playing the field, and you seem like a decent enough person whose brain is so obviously full of beauty,to help a sister out. Especially when it involves expanding the mind and shit. So sending me this alleged spine chilling book honored with your signature, you would not only be doing a good deed but leaving a scumbag like me in a puddle of appreciation.
P.s. give Colleen Hoover a smack on the buns good job out there on Ugly Love, absolutely brilliant
Everything I have read by Amy Harmon I have truly loved through-and-through. Every story she tells has such strong characters mixed in with strong moments in the story that make your mind work faster, your heart beat heavier and your musing last longer.
Law of Moses is one of the best books I’ve read. This is another book that inspired me to continue and pursue my dream of becoming a special education teacher. On reading a book, it doesn’t have to be so gramatically perfect, have tons of metaphors, and something like that. It’s much more about how the story moved you, how it left a mark on you…
Btw… Where did Amy base the character of Moses? Is it just from her mind? Because I think it’s possible that a man sees souls and can do stuffs like what Moses does. Is it somewhat true that when your close dead relative is always with you, that means your time’s up… And the choices when you would really want to live or not?
I read A Different Blue for the third time this week. Right after finishing Law of Moses, I craved for similar book. Amy Harmon is so amazing. And every character is so so so different from the other! I’m not trying to butter anybody up but after Mud Vein I love my Harmon books the most.. I Hope that one day i acquire this talent you and Amy have.
I agree I love this book. I have been reading since I was 5 I would stay up with a flashlight. My mom would put me on book restriction when I would get in trouble that’s the only thing that meant anything to restrict me from. I had books hidden all over. I read anything and everything looking forward to more from this author.
I agree with just about everything you said including your love for cheep wine (although I prefer mine tart rather then sweet)which you’re forgiven for, lol. I ADORED The Law of Moses and every single time I am asked for a good book to read this one is always one of the few I recommend!
Wow! I loved this post when I first read it a while ago and have read several of the authors that you mentioned (without disappointment). It is hard with babies and work to find time to read..but I just finally got around to Law of Moses…Awesome! I can’t put it down. Since I know that your genius can only come out so fast and I can’t expect monthly books from you, I am going to need you to recommend other reading options. So far, you have given me every reason to have absolute trust in you. (PS…I like that you are a book snob…and Jam Jar rocks!)
A recommendation about a book from a favorite author definitely deserves to be read. I don’t even have to read the synopsis 🙂
Ah, Zinfandel, the wine most likely to induce tears and laughter (in no particular order). Only after reading Bad Mommy did I start stalking your blog (blame Fig, I never knew one could author-stalk), so here we are, reading the backlogs. Even your reviews make me want to curl up and sip (not Jam Jar). Amazing words, Tarryn.
